I was talking to Wade about this earlier today but I figured others might be interested in dipping.

Basically, you paint the base colours on your models then you dip them in wood stain (hence "dipping").

Here's a post on Dakka about dipping with pictures:

And more instructions on how to do it:

What-ho!

I would have to say it looks interesting. I very much like the Nids, zombies and Orks, but I'm not too keen on the Marines and human figures myself.

This, come to think of it, is very similar to a pottery glazing technique that I use a lot. I haven't given it a go with models though. On pots the results can look quite effective or a bit blurk; it seems to be the same on figures Grin  But good show all the same.

Wow, they look awesome. I would never have thought they'd look that good. I'm usually reluctant to use any technique which involves relinquishing control of the final look, but this seems to work rather well.

I'd imagine it's only going to benefit those models you paint with a fairly 'tight' colour scheme (ie all the colours are close in enough in shade to benefit from a wash of the same colour). I probably wouldn't use it for everything, but as the pics demonstrate, muted colour schemes like Orks and Kroot look great. I reckon a lizardmen army would look great with this technique as well.

Ditto for my Dwarfs. Good stuff; just watch the temperature/climate when you are dipping as it affects the viscousity of the product.

I tried the dipping today. The result is bit different from those pics, my models seems too shiny.  Shall I wash it again with chaos black ?

oh, thnx but  still have few questions.
Oil based matt varnishes?
Do I just apply that onto the surface or mix it with the stain?
Where can I find that?
