I’m just back into 8th ed (and play HE) and it seems that with step and up and steadfast heavy cavalry has been largely neutralised in 8th ed?  I seem to see a lack of cavalry running around these days.    Thoughts?  Smiley

Cav still has it's place!
This thread on Ulthuan.net is one of the better examples of this, and is particularly relevant to you as it's HE.
I've been running a unit of 10 Wild Riders in my WE army for the last months and absolutely love them. The main reasons would be the damage output and speed, and the fact that monsters can't stomp them.
'Buses' of cav can be very effective, with the sheer amount of damage they can do it doesn't matter how many models the opposing unit has - they're not going to break but they sure are going to die! Playing with a friends army I had a unit of 10 Chaos Knights with a Chaos Lord on Juggernaught and a mounted BSB. Absolutely brutal, smashed everything they touched, hilarious game.

Cavalry are probably one of the most underestimated , under used thing in 8th edition.

But they do suffer from certain match ups where they will just die in droves. Such as Doom Diver/ Manglers

Under High Elves, I would say Dragon Princes is the only way to go , unless you are sticking 2 characters in there, then Silver Helms are just bodies to fill up space.
Dragon Princes are also nice vs the Flaming banner Smiley

2+ Save is always better than  a 5+ right?

Step up Doesn't actually do much against them, It's just the steadfast, they are hardly ever going to break it unless its been severly thinned or infantry come in to 'Mop up'
