I use VMA paints. Easy to use straight out of the bottle means they are great for people learning to use airbrushes as you dont need to learn to mix paints to begin with.
I started with just using an airbrush to undercoat models, and now have moved on to basecoats and shading effects.
They are brilliant for paint tanks etc.
Learning how to adjust the pressure and getting paints thinned to the right consistency is the biggest challenge for beginners.
Sort yourself out a flat well lit area and practice on some paper. Learn how different viscosity paints work with your airbrush and what effects pressure and the nozzle adjustments make to the flow of paint. Try thinning normal paints and VMA paints. A tip is to work with low pressures (dependant on paint). Try 5-30psi range and get a feel for the action of your brush (they are all different)
hope some of this helps
