Thunder stomps 2011

Just came back from my second OZ warhammer tournament, Thunderstomps 2011.

It was a 1600 points tournament held in a small town 150km north of Sydney. It used “judge” comp and allowed special characters. Initially I was planning to take my new Ogre but I didn’t get to paint my “new” toys in time so I took my Lizardmen instead.

With the experience I had 2 months ago at Castle Assault, I decided to take the hardest list I could possibly put together, just to prove how rubbish “judge” comp is.

My list is as follow:

Slann
Ethereal
Focused Rumination
Cube of darkness
Crown of command

Scar vet
BSB
Armor of destiny
Great weapon

Scar vet
Dragon helm
Light armor
Shield
Sword of anti heroes
Luckstone

25 saurus with full command

11 skinks skirmishers with javelins
10 skinks skirmishers with javelins

3 Terradons

9 chameleon skinks

2 salamanders
1 salamander

With this list I got a 2.5 out of 5 for comp and I was rolling on the floor laughing when I saw it.

Game 1
WOC

Level 4 tzeentch sorc lord, with third eye, +D3 for 1 spell and 3+ ward
Khorne BSB on jugg with chaos runw sword
Horde of marauders with MOS
20 warriors with MOK
5 chaos knights

It was a pretty typical WOC list which I knew I could roll over it pretty easily. I made sure I dropped my “purple sun” so his sorc lord couldn’t use it against me with his “third eye”.

The mission was “Dawn attack” and our armies ended up in the opposite corner. I killed his khorne BSB with spirit leech on the first turn then my salamanders charged up and incinerated 12 chaos warriors and 5 chaos knights with the help of the soulblight hex on turn 2 and 3.

My death star later cleaned up his marauders.

20-0 to me.

Game 2

Simon Turner, OZ master player

Beastmen

Level 2 bray shaman
Staff of sorcey + stuff

BSB wargor + stuff

Horde of Besitgers
Horde of gors

3 chariots
3 razorgors chariots

razorgors
razorgors
razorgors

No magic attacks, no level 4, no scroll.

Despite he tried very hard to stay away from me, I caught his army in the end and tabled him by turn 4.

20-0 to me.

Game 3

Vampire

This is the first list I played against with special characters.

Vampire lord level 4 with shadow and lots of toys
Mannfred the Acolyte
Konrad Von Carsein

Horde of ghouls
Another horde of ghouls

6 blood knights

Lore of shadow, Mannfred and Konrad made a vicious combination, but I was still confident that I could take them.

The vampire player went first, threw 4 or 5 dice to cast “withering” and went off IF with triple 6. He then rolled double 1 followed by a 2 which blew his Vampire lord up and took 4 blood knights with him.

After a few minutes of swearing and cursing, he then spent a few more minutes begging me to let him restart his magic phase. When he realized it would not happen, we continued on with the game.

On my first turn, I spirit leeched Konrad and caressed Mannfred with Caress of Laniph. He then threw down his dice and stormed out of the room.

20-0 to me

Game 4

Ogre

I was at the top table at the moment, so I knew I was due to play Roy, another Master/ ETC player which was closely behind me on points.

His list:
Level 2 Firebelly +toys
Bruiser BSB + toys

10 iron guts
4 leadbelchers
10 gnoblars with trappers
Sabretusk

Sabretusk
Sabretusk
4 maneaters with AHW, HA, scout and stubborn
Gorger
Ironblaster

It was almost another guaranteed win to me right up to turn 4, when my luck went down hill like an invert exponential curve.

My death star (saurus, 2 scar vets + Slann) was in a sure win combat with his death star (ironguts + BSB), I casted purple sun on the ironguts with IF, I then amusingly misfired and scattered the purple sun onto my saurus and killed 11 of them.
Adding insult to injury, I them rolled double 1 on the miscast table and blew my slann up, it took 7 more saurus down when it got sucked into the warp.

In the next ensuring combat phase, I failed my fear test and my BSB took 3 wounds, failed 3 armor saves, then failed 3 ward saves. When I thought it couldn’t get any worse.

I failed my -2 Ld break test on 3D6.

And that was the end. 16-4 to Roy.

I came second overall, 1.5 points behind Roy due to comp and painting bonus.

Oouch...

He then threw down his dice and stormed out of the room.

Oh the irony, panel comp kept you from winning Cheesy

Hilarity and comp aside, what is your impression of 1600 point events? A good size to play at? How long do you think you need to play a game of that size?

it was actually the painting score kept me from winning, I got 6 out of 10 and he got 8 out of 10.   Undecided

I think I need to give my Lizard a new paint job if I am going use it more in future events...

1600 pointa event is great fun, but I would prefer to leave the special characters at home.
A 1600 point list requires you to make hard decisions on what to take and limits the amount of toys you can have on your characters.

1 hour and 45 mins is more than enough for 1 game,I reckon.

To be fair, while he probably could have handled it better, the fact he only had 2 blocks of ghouls, which would disintergrate by themselves quite quick, no magic to rebuild them and 0 hope of getting any points means a concession was probably always on the cards in that game. Like I said, he probably could have been less of a douche about it though

Saddest thing I've read on here in a long while

Saddest? Funniest more like. I bet this "walking out" incident was immediately preceded by Simon doing his patented *boogie woogie* victory dance, and carefully explaining to his beleagered opponant (probably 14 years old or younger) that with a bit of practice and a few years, he too could have some awsome Warhammer skills and be almost as good as Simon. Fantastic. Best thing I've read all week.

Reminds me of all of those times I made Simon cry. ha ha ha ha ha

I have to apologise guys. I had a game against Antony today since Masters is coming up. I reminded him that there won't be any High Elf armies in the Masters this year and perhaps he should practice against another army. After vowing the need to stomp my Elves I put up a valiant but very poor fight (multiple silly mistakes) and so here's my apology. To give Antony an ego trip so he didn't have such a dour approach after getting hammered repeatedly for most of the year has made him not quite fit through the door due to an over inflated self opinion Wink I'll make sure I stomp him next time so he remains more humble Tongue

@Simon
Very poor behaviour from your opponent but I'm sure there was a immediate fist pump as he left the building.

A little bit of Nick Ng humour there I see. Nice.

I agree with Antony - that Vampire players reaction is just hilarious. Good job too with that filthy little combo.

Simon Turner sounds like a fluffy Glen Tibbles!

Nice work Simon - looks like you're in your element Wink

I detest fist-pumping gloat-festivals as much as tanty walk-outs, shows really childlike social skills I think, no respect.

1600 points is a strange number, coupled with peer comp, AND including SC, it is a strange land. Mindyou, guess they're shocked at 2400 points, hard caps, and no SC.

Didn't mention it before, due to sarcasm mode being on. So with sarcasm mode off, well done Simon!
