All,

the New Zealand team for the ETC 2012 in Poland is:

Dave Grant (Captain - 3rd cap)
John Matthews (3rd cap)
Chris Wilcox (3rd cap)
Mal Patal (2nd cap)
Dave Meachan (2nd cap)
Dan Butler (1st cap)
Locky Reid (1st cap)
Rowan Keating (1st cap)
Mark Skilton (Non-playing coach & reserve player - 2nd cap)

Congratulation s to those that made it, and apologies to those applicants that didn't. With 17 applicants this year it was a tough decision, and one we honestly didn't expect to be having to make.

For those on the team, please ensure you are on the private section of the 'Warhammer Forum' as soon as possible (Dan and Locky I am still waiting for your access to be granted by sites admin, sent a reminder to them tonight). We need to 'crack-on' discussing plans, armies etc.

For everyone else: Please assist the team in preparing for the event in any way you can, the more you help this year, the more chance there is that any future ETC application will be successful.

Thanks again. If anyone has any queries regarding the selection process, please let me know.

Thanks

Dave Grant (ETC 2012 Team NZ Captain)

I heard Mr Sheen is a good polish... getting a bit ahead of yourself planning how to clean the trophy already though.

What a great team!

I think we can rest assured that there is every prospect you'll do just as well as our last teams, if not better.

Hi there I have three questions I would like to ask.  I did not apply this year for the ETC but in future year I would like to.

1) What are your selection criteria for applicants?
2) Has this selection criteria been ratified by the wider war-gaming community in NZ?  After all these people will be representing NZ.
3) What authority gives you the right to select and judge applicants for ETC?

Thank you.

Looks strongest possible team guys

Dave Grant - Winner 1st NZ Masters
John Matthews - #1 NZ Player - 2009
Chris Wilcox - Top 10 Ranked Oz player
Rowan Keating - Top 10 Ranked Oz Player
Mal Patel - #1 NZ Player 2011
Dave Meachen - Returning ETC Player, Top Ten NZ 2010
Locky Reid - Top 5 NZ Player 2011
Daniel Butler - #3 NZ Player 2011

Pretty hard to argue with the make-up. Gets my stamp of approval.

Well done to the guys and the selectors.

@RoriusMaximus

Try and get to every tournament in nz and Win. Kick everyone's butt at masters and that should seal the deal i say.

I dont have the option to play out of Aux so i never really get past about 2-3 a year.

1) Selection criteria were posted in the other ETC 2012 thread... it boils down to. Be able to go, don't be a dick and be good at warhammer. Ultimately selection is quite subjective.

2) No.

3) None.

After these short answers allow me to explain rational/history.

2010 NZ attened ETC for the first time. A few people (mostly John M I belive) thought it would be good for NZ to go (Ozzies had gone year before). Requirements for an ETC are that at least 4 of the time must qualify for their country as per 'FIFA' rules (basically have an NZ passport, or have lived their for a while).

In 2010 we had 4 'Kiwi's' in the team, with the rest being 'ringers' - although generally had some connection with NZ.... basically we 'just' scraped together enough players with the Team

In 2011 we had 10 people who wanted to play. 8 'Kiwi's' and 2 of the 'ringers' from the year before. These were myself and John M.. whilst we are not 'Kiwi's' I believe we both stayed in NZ for long enough to qualify for residency if we had wanted to. Selection was decided by the people who went the year before.

For 2012 we have had 17 applicants. I had been chosen by the Team to be Captain in 2010 and 2011 and was chosen again for 2012. The previous attendees agreed that selection should be done by 3 people who had been in the 2011 team.

'Selection Commitee' was:
Myself - Team Captain 2010 and 2011
Chris W - 2010, 2011 caps lives in OZ and knows the players there.
Mal P - 2011 cap, ranked #1 in NZ and knows players there

Unlike many countries Team NZ is a bit unique, as so many people go on 'OE's' the potential players are scattered all over the world. As such some teams may rely more on rankings, but when the pool of players play in 5-6 different countries that makes it difficult. As such things like rankings can be used as a guide, but ultimately selection needs to be more subjective.

Anyway... for 2012 we had 8 applicants based in NZ, 4 based in OZ and 5 based in 'rest of world'. So selection was split and we agreed to select 3 from NZ, 2 from OZ, 3 from Rest of world. We also agreed that at least 3 players should be 'new caps'. Selection was made by individuals from 2011 Team and players chosen as Creiteria above.

If we are to expect a higher number of applicants in the future I would suggest a more robust system for selection, but I have no idea how this should be done.

For your second question how would/should we define the 'NZ community'. Many Kiwis do not live in NZ, should these be excluded from potential selection? What about those that do/have lived in NZ and contributed a lot to the scene - should these be included?

Once that is done... which could be impossible to do 'fairly' and so everyone is happy - defining 'authority' to select could be tricky.

So essentailly team selection has evolved over a couple of years. It is currently driven by those who have put the most into the ETC team in the past. There is no 'official' remit, but I feel we have done out best to 'fairly' represent NZ, whilst maintaining a competative team.

Does that help?

Thank you for your reply and thank you for answering honestly.
I feel they were questions that needed to be asked.  Additionally, I feel, with the growing interest in the ETC (the aforementioned 17 applicants this year) it would probably be beneficial to have some form of formal charter and/or committee in the future/2014.  As I can't foresee the number of applicants diminishing as the ETC is such a spectacular event, and is and will be important to a lot of people in the future.

Good luck for 2013 Poland
