Hi guys,

New to Auckland this year, have not war gamed in a long time but am getting back into it. Will take me a month or so to get an army build and ready to play! Just wondering if there are more players for fantasy or 40k?

I am not looking for a debate on which is the better platform just what the size is for the player base of each. Personally I would prefer fantasy to start off but if there are not many players maybe I will have to play something else.

Anyway good to be here  Tongue

Hey Alex, welcome. I'm not able to speak much about how many fantasy players there are at the club, but no doubt someone else will provide that info. There do seem to be a fair number of them though.

As for 40K, there are quite a few of us and most of the time you won't lack for someone to play against on Sunday. You can always tee up a game on these forums before hand or just show up on the day. There's usually a wallflower or three looking for a game. Most of the time the size of the game tends to be whatever the next comp is. If there isn't one due for a while, you're generally safest with 1850.

Thanks for that I will hold of purchasing an army until a few more peeps post  Wink As far as models go in NZ, are the tournaments Games Workshop models only or can you get away with using other models provided thet are a fari represntation?

Last thing, do people like to play campaigns at all or is it pretty much mainly tournament testing lists?

Thanks again,
Alex

Not from Auckland but my sense is that numerically, the 40k players have the edge. The WHFB will be better people of course, so... quality vs quantity?

The choice is yours  Grin

Gidday,

As I go to the club every week, I would say, on average, there would usually be five games of 40K going on on Sunday's. Maybe six or seven for fantasy.

Fantasy does tend to be more popular... at the moment anyway.

As for models, no-one cares any longer about G.W. things - if you want to use something else, go for it! No-one will stop you. Antony has made an Ogre army out of $2 shop buddas, for example.

Lastly, it is rather rare to see a campaign at the club. Feel free to start one.

What Lezle meant to say was that it is compulsory, and also considered good form, to start one up if you are new to the club. Part of the rights of initiation if you will.

OK, not really, but we really should do something along those lines at some stage.

Brilliant I was hopeing inside that there would be more Fantasy players  Grin

I am a big fan of campaigns and am more than happy to run one, however first things first It would be good to get to know people. I have been a long time MTG player in Dunedin and Wellington but have decided to switch codes now  that I am working in Auckland.

Will start ordering minatures and paints now exciting!

Thanks for the kind reception so far.

Good man, join the fantasy gamers.
I dont play 40k so I can only speak for fantasy.
But the players on sundays are all a great bunch and will give you good games.
Plus its always fun to have some fresh meat to kick round the table.

Welcome to the Club Alex! See that you've made a quick visit to the introduction page too, good stuff. City guard is good that it doesn't concentrate on any one system and you're sure to find many games every Sunday at the the club.

What army have you decided to go for? If you haven't got an army at the moment there is 2-3 armies that we have as demo armies in the club cupboards for you to have a loan of and a go at. If you want to either come in on Sunday or give me a email I'll be happy to sort it out for you.

Thanks,

As for the army I am going to pick, still up in the air but it is between; VC, WoC, Ogres and WE. This weekend I am away unfortunatly however the weekend after I would love to come along and watch a few games. I have not played in such a long time will be better to watch for the first week me thinks.

I would have to say VC is attractive due the Mantic games having a pretty good selection of compatable models at reasonable prices.

Have added some more information on the introduction page.

Just a head up on that one old bean, the club is not on Sept 25 as the hall is booked out and the following week is Guardcon, so it may be pretty quiet at Freemans Bay.

Thought you should know.

This weekend Club is open then there will be two weekends where it will be closed. On the weekend of the 1st & 2nd of Oct we're holding the clubs annual convention 'GuardCon' which will be a tournament held at 'Mt Albert War Memorial Hall' on New North Rd. Totally recommend you come and have a look and the tournamnet is on these forums if you want to have a read.
