So having not played a tournament in the last few years I am thinking of maybe heading back to play a few.
I am looking at a new army for the venture but really have no idea what the general points costs or list restrictions are these days for your average tournament.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated  Smiley

Hey Monky, I've got 5 armies and the club has 2 armies to get you started. I honestly don't think you'll be short of models though. 2400pts is the go for most tournaments and 8th is easy to get into. About time you came in for a game me thinks on Sundays Smiley

I have enough armies trust me Grin

What I lack is painting time so really dont want to paint anything for my new army that people will later turn around and say "well you cant use that" ..... hence the question

Gone are the days of GW tourneys in the country, where you had to use their models. Sport what you like and proxy what you like but be prepared for a ribbing if you bring along any ol plastic and call it a dragon Smiley Bring 2400pts and we'll sort you a game tomorrow and bring Nick.

Here's some examples Monky:

- Pump Wagons and Mangler Squigs are awesome AND fun. Don't expect to be allowed to take them in large numbers. It generally seems that double Rare anything but Eagles (yeah, go figure) is a no go.

- TOs sometime ban things you just don't see coming for reasons that are difficult to immediately recognise and potentially very hard to predict. You can't take the Puppet at GuardCon (is this correct?! I couldn't quite believe this when I heard it) - woot for 6 dice spell rolling I guess and sucks a little more to be Chaos Warriors and be compelled to take a L4 like everyone else. Fortunately this doesn't so much apply to models as it does items.

- There are caps as far as I'm aware (and as far as Fantasy goes now I am rapidly becoming more and more unaware every week) on units sizes depending on the points cost of the individual models in the unit (including upgrades? Not sure...). If you have a unit of cheap crap be prepared to only be able to take ONE truly large unit. And by truly large I mean max unit size 50. Oh how I would love just once at a tournament to field a unit of 100 Goblins.

- Phil has used the ETC as a guideline for GuardCon and between this and Pete Dunn's comp-guidelines (described somewhere on his blog - can't track them down at the moment) this is probably what you can expect to see at most events. This is close I think.

ADC scalps collected = 2 (does it count as 2 when it's been Philfy both times?)

IMHO heres my thoughts:-

Doubles rares are totally allowed just not the nasty ones and I don't believe in the 70pt limit thats around. I think there was some rampant wargamer house wife gossip going around with a rumour 'Double rares are not allowed' as someone misread the Guardcon pack, lols.

Having restrictions to level the playing field usually means an army shouldn't have an unfair advantage if every other army is unable to do the same thing. The inf Puppet is recognised as an annoying and possibly a game winning item. I don't believe why you should be able to blow up an opponents Archie and save yours at the same time and call it a fair even item. To say the ban on inf pup has reduced the capabilities of WoC in any noticable capacity, I doubt it very much as WoC are just not that inferior an army.

I've used the ETC as a bit of a guideline to the GuardCon pack as i think it's a very well thought out and researched document from a world wide perspective. Gone are 7th hindrances and views that this army is soft and this army is OP. 8th is really a whole different kettle of fish and I hope the viewed as soft armies in GuardCon do the wargaming community a service and open some eyes on their viability.
