I've been yacking to one of the guys I regularly game with about the old GW game Space Marine, and we have decided to dig out our old armies and give it a blast again.

So I went hunting in my boxes of old stuff, and after nearly 16-17 years of rest my orks are once again going to see the light of day.

The Goffz

Kult of Speed, freebooterz, stormboyz and madboyz

Bad Moonz

Snakebites

These guys were amongst the very first gaming pieces I ever painted, (an Imperial fleet for the game Spacefleet predates them) and for some reason me from back then had used about four different shades of green on the bases.  So I gave all the bases a quick lash of camo green, and some flock, and they are good to go.

To be honest, it's been kind of cool to have them drawn up on the painting table again after so many years.

Bugger it, one of the snakebites Nobs is facing the wrong way around.  There is always one in any group photo isn't there.

awesome  Grin

hot damn, old epic is one system i want to give a spin.  always liked the look of the edition they put out with the last boxed set (rules and models), and it'd be fun to see a game of this being played in the flesh

Cheers dude

Space marine (2nd ed) was an awesome game.  I'm looking forward to gettting it on the table again.

I've actually got a whole bunch of space marine, and chaos stuff that I collected before they changed (ruined) the whole system to warhammer epic 40000.  And I'm planning to paint them up as loaner armies.  Just got to finish my 28mm colonial brits first.

you reckon they ruined it with epic?  i really liked the look of the game and heard good things about it, so was keen to give it a hoon.  only fiddled around with Space Marine once or twice when i was 11 or 12, so remember very little (the guy was probably feeding me bum rules in order to cheat anyways)

Epic (3rd ed) itself was a clever, smooth running system.  However space marine (2nd ed) was a system that was absolutly steeped in special rules for units. (orks especially so)  While that could make it a bit daunting to learn, it is also what made it such a cool and richly detailed game.

Not only was the change to epic a radically different system, (much, much, more so than any of the changes that have taken place in the edition changes with WHFB or 40k) in the name of making a faster playing game they abstracted, and outright dropped the vast majority of the special unit rules.

I basically hated it because it felt like changing from eating your favourate, flavor filled, chocolate chip loaded icecream, to eating plain vanilla.

One of the reasons I'm going to make a space marine army as a loaner (aside from the fact I have them sitting in a box,  waiting to be painted ) is that while they were a very good force, they were not quite as special rule heavy as some of the other forces.  Basically they were a bit more straight forward to learn with.
