I've just put my order into Iron Halo for bases for my Skaven army.

I have about 300 models Including assorted warmachines:
Bell, Furnace, Warp Lightning cannon or catapult
Abomination, various weapons teams

Starting to wonder if I've taken on a job that is too big Smiley

I think with the bulk troops I will dip them.
I've got this can of timber oil stain and I'm wondering if it will melt the plastic  Grin
I've also got lots of extra models to test with  Grin

Yeah, Nick knows the score.

Somewhere on the forum is "The Dipping Wars Saga"... or something like that. Have a look - he has the trials and tribulations listed! Cheesy

hi Derrick, I dipped my Ogres, I can let you know the product I used if that would help. The ogres were plastic and didn't melt.
I found actually brushing the dip  on worked well over just dipping into the stain.

I would also be interested to learn what you used on your Ogres because I am thinking of dipping some of my models as well. And those Ogres of yours look fantastic!

Thanks Dan,
I'm thinking that dunking into the pot would get into the crevaces better. (Plus I get to make a mess when I shake off the excess.)

Actually I'm thinking to using a drill to spin off  the excess.
so any excess can be captured in a separate can ... and the model if it flies off the end of the drill Smiley

I've got 300ml of a stain called forestwood blackbean, its a very dark stain.
I might thin it out a bit with some turps, just in case its too dark.

How are you planning on mounting the model onto the drill Derick? I super glued a gazillion flat head nails onto the bases of my skeletons when I dipped my VC army and it worked ok but make sure you have the nail as central as possible and don't have the drill speed to high as they launch off the nail heads really well at high RPM also the stain mostly flings off if to fast. The nails then sit in a pre-drilled piece of wood so you can dip and dry quickly however eventually I went with a manual finger spin rather than the drill as it gave me more control.

I my Nurgle Daemons I brushed the stain on half of them and dunked the other half just to see the difference in techniques. Both methods are easy and have different results but spam out the models quickly, should do it for my Skaven but have committed to paint them like the first batch I started so many years ago before the dipping method was around. Have fun

Oh and what bases did you get from Iron Halo, I don't think you mentioned what sort you are using?

That was my little joke, I wasn't sure that the drill method would work. Thanks for the tip Aaron. I will be finger dipping and flicking, though I might use gloves Smiley

I decided on the Keep bases. I was looking at Brickworks, but since I have to create bases for the Screaming Bell and the 2 Plague furnaces.. we're talking 60 x 100 bases, which is a not yet a common size... so I'm going to join 3 20x100 bases.
I needed to go with something without an obvious pattern. The Brickworks have an obvious pattern which wouldn't fit in.

I've already painted up 50 plague monks and 6 weapons teams, they will be first in the dip Smiley
300 rats to go...

If you have a spare bit of time to glue the nails to the bases, try the pre-drilled wood and glued on nail trick as it is much easier to spin the model between index finger and thumb using the glued on nail than to get a cramped wrist from flicking off the excess from 300 models. The amount of flicking required for a single model is a fair amount while a spin of five or six rotations on the nail will do the save effect. You will have to brush or flick metal models maybe but the plastics will be fine. Also, it may be hard to explain that your wrist is bandaged up because you were flicking your toys in your wrist afterwards too  Tongue

nice idea about putting together three 20x100 bases  Smiley When I finally get around to green stuffing that size base for my Skaven with the cobbled pattern on them I'll flick a couple your way if they aren't to dis-similar from the Keep bases you have for your army if you want

I dipped my Nurgle WOC army.

I suggest not actually "dipping" the models.

I used a tank brush I believe to "paint" it on - works a treat
