canopener 2011
«

But just out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea how well canopener did last year?
How many participants / players / cash raised?
There are no records so just asking if someone could give a rough estimate.
Someone did say there were not so many players.

I don't know numbers, but yeah CanOpener had a very poor turn out last year.
I think less than half of the 40k and WFB players who said they'd come turned up; and the other gaming systems had just as low a turn out.

I remember last year for 40k. 7 people turned up.

Why do you think we don't get big numbers for this type of event?
Is it because gamers take their gaming seriously and feel that the random use of cans denigrates their game?
I'm already getting ideas for can use for next year:
... if you roll double ones, your opponent has to pay a can or you get to re roll. If you roll double 6's you have to pay a can or re-roll
Can anyone else thing of some really evil can use?
(this is a good time to bring up these ideas, as it is fresh in our minds)

I dunno Derick, everyone I spoke to had a pretty lighthearted approach to the whole thing, with the small numbers I would have to assume a lot of people aren't up for such a long stint 8am-7pm of wargaming. Also, to be competitive you want to spent a fair bit on cans, for others $ might be an issue. Then there's the low points value format, that's a huge turnoff for a lot of others. So it's those factors really.
One of my opponents even went into IOU mode with his cans after he'd run out, something which I had no problem with, since nobody was really taking the winning & losing part of it super seriously. With the warhammer event at least, there was hardly any comp and the amount of cans per player ranged from 3 to 120, so it's more of a show up and see what happens if you can make it type of affair. I personally think the turnout was great in general.

Turn out was great this year.
...I could be convinced that it was the best turn out yet?
It varies over time, but I think a lot of people (who don't come) fit into two catagories:
Those who have timetabling issues with attending on a Saturday (possibly instead of a usual gaming day).
Those who aren't prepared to take the light hearted, but dedicated, approach necessary for the CanOpener event - small lists, 'non-competitive', high cost (lots of cans get pricy), fun-times.
I think this also ties in to point one also with less people prepared to schedule out a full Saturday for a one day half-serious (charity) event.

Fantastic turnout for this years event. This was only my second CanOpener but from all accounts this was the biggest Charity event at the club so far. I have to apologise for not advertising it as much as I could since I was only put in charge of promotion and getting Umpires together for this event about 7 weeks ago due to unforeseen reasons.
about 1000 cans raised
$200 cash donations
With the spectacular result we can all pat ourselves on the back for a great job done this year! For future charity events we will be promoting it much earlier and advertising it in all the stores. A big thank you for the travellers who made an effort to get in their gaming fix and also to support a good cause. The Umpires and Kitchen helpers have the Clubs thank you for a great job done. To all the people who made it this year and the ones who helped to drive the tonne of cans to the City mission, we really appreciated it.
Last but not least a big thank you to the generosity of
Battlefront Miniatures, Vagabonds in the City, Bella Espresso and IronHalo
for all the prize support.
Phil.

Tell you what Derick, by making the 40k players buy the secondary missions for more points for the cost of a can I had about fifteen odd cans before the dice were rolled every round

Maybe we could 'sell' cans next year(at cost) - just have 48 or so to help out those desparate souls.
I know a few people didn't use all their cans, I used all mine. Then in the last game Aaron, split his remaining cans with me. Serious... I don't think so

We should really try to get as much as possible happening, for next year.
Would anyone be keen to run/play FOW, Ancients, Wings of War, Magic ... anything else?
Regan and Mike were playing Battlestar Galactica in the afternoon.
Given the really serious(not) nature of Canopener this could be a great opportunity to branch out and play something different.
I have noticed that most of us a fairly reluctant to change and just like to keep in to our little comfort zones.
But if the opportunity was there would you consider it?

Hunter_flood you can always help me out with Guard con this year.
But does that still allow me to take part in the tournament. I've come up with a few mission ideas so far, I'll just have to test them out at some point.
