That's a nice haul.

Warmachine is generally pretty lax about the painting (they can distinguish between the painting and playing sides of the hobby ), so feel free to slap feet to the bases and get playing.

I would go Battleboxes for a few games to get a handle on the rules (a good foundation means you crush more and get crushed less).

When playing 35pts I would try and play the infantry dudes with the flag, they are pretty good at getting in the way of bullets and letting you play more agressive with Sorscha who has an unfortunate tendency to die when hit.

Dude, i'm thinking this is one of those games where you really, really need to read the rules first and play some basic games with the starter kits they set out for you.

But aside from that, i'm itching to lay into you with my circle boys.  I'm one step ahead of you having skimmed the rules and asked chris a few general questions.

One of the negative things about warmahordes is the perception it has from outsiders.  I recently talked to a guy I was playing 40k with about how his attempt at warmachine went.

He told me that he came to the club, having assembled and painted his army, spent all the time to meet and greet his opponent, deploy both armies, kick off the first turn, and his opponent kills his warcaster and wins the game in turn one.

He immediately quit the hobby!  Ouch.  I think that sort of thing can easily be avoided though, if you start by working through your masses of homework and play through the basics first. 

Hows GHQ going anyway?  I need to find more excuses to attend.

its good bro. real good. played my last game of 40k last nite vs matts blood angels. slaughter! then i helped gin build a pokemon deck and we had some games in prep for the pokemon nats this weekend.

Unfortunately Warmachine does tend to accumulate the occasional, but rather notable player who ruins the game for others.
though I imagine other games do just as much too; except they manage to avoid the stigma.

Daemion, are you going to the beach with Nobbs on the 18/19th?
By all means have a go with 35pts if you think you can handle it, but be prepared to peel it back to ~15pts.
- there's no reason you can't muck around with Butcher+2 Decimators as an alternate battlebox.

If you can, you'll find it very worthwhile magnetizing your jacks (so they can be any of the variants).

Seems like a fine list and to be honest it wouldn't be completely terrible either.

I would swap the mortar for Kovnik Joe-seph Grigorovich (who makes you shooty dudes better and insane with the butcher) and a War Dog (who is wicked at keeping butcher even more un-killable) and then I would be fine playing that in a tournament.

Question for the old hands. In warmachine, is the size of the figure relevant or the size of the base? I read somewhere that LOS is drawn to the base rather than the model itself (so no targeting weapons, etc). Is that the case? If so, it opens up some possibilities for my proxies force.

For the record, I'm still considering Retribution, but rather than Mantic stuff I'm going to use my 40k Stargate Necrons. I'm gonna get some 30mm flat discs to magnetise/blu-tac under their existing 25mm round bases. Figured they'd be a better fit as they mostly have melee weapons that act as guns. But now I'm looking at alternatives to Warjacks. Daemion suggested old Wraithlord models, which may be a cheaper option but I was worried about the size difference.

The base is indeed whats important. You can convert models however you want but you measure to the base.

Warmachine is a game easy to learn and hard to master.
Personally, I have never read the rules and do just fine. The game is more about learning the combos rather than abusing poorly written rules.
Good to hear there's more people keen on starting WM/Hordes, can't wait to get a couple of games in with you fellas

Yeah that was good times.  After the demo day they had at cityguard a few months ago, I was not taking a lot of info at much of it went over my head and was tough to remember.  Also, studying the rules on my own was hard as I had no immediate examples to help me get my head around what I was reading.  But watching and playing a game last night in the context of all of that really got me up to speed.

On the rules: If you want to read anything to get an understanding of how it all works, I would just read the quickstart rules. They cover the core mechanics and give a good feel for the game. Everything else you can pretty much learn as you go.

Daemion if you had Doomreavers my guys might have been able to at least kill something in your army.

Sooooooooo- i am gonna convert one of my plastic jacks into a dedicated kodiak. i love the jack too much not to have one in my force to watch the butcher's back.
