is there a cheap alternative that people use out there?  i think i should give up on the 25+ buck GW official cans of chaos black, and surely there's sn equivalent that spray on nice and evenly without costing the moon.

I have a couple of cans of the GW black, you can have them for $20 each if you want.

I think most other undercoat spray cans for automotive / DIY etc. are too thick. I used to work at Dulux paint trade, and every spray can we had, would have been miles to heavy/thick for undercoating quality mini's with fine details.

If there is an alternative that is just as good I'd be very interested to know, I've gone through 3 cans to date :S

...or what about Tamyia?

I use Tamiya Matt black. Goes on very even and thin. Can't remember the price though, and the cans are quite a bit smaller than the GW ones.

Tamiya stuff is way over prices about 50% less can than the GW and are around $15 per can. Over priced i think and GW stuff it better than the Tamiya i have found that to Run a little.

Heard good stuff from the Delux spray they are around $12.

I buy my spray paint from Mitre10/Bunnings/etc.

bigger than GW, cheaper, and available in a variety of colours.
Can't remember the brand I'm using right now, but I know plastikote worked quite well; as did the dulux interior ones.

yup changed to the miter 10 stuff as i did not want to spend $25 on spray any more, had no issue with this stuff just drying time is a bit longer.

I haven't worked there for over 5 years, but at the time, thier black undercoat spray ran quite easily, you'd have to be quite careful with it and spray from a good distance to get it to work well. I might go back to my old store and see if I can still fire up the staff discount.

Hahahaha, nah my old boss still works there Smiley

It's a trade store also, so if you aren't a painter you cannot buy anything, worked wonders at keeping homeless glue sniffers and taggers out of the shop.

As with all trade only stores, the prices are damned awesome. Last time I sorted a friend out with paint it was $89 for 10 liters of premium paint, versus $165 from mitre 10, exact same stuff Cheesy

I got a functional (at least I think so) 1850 necron army now, if you want a fluffy game at some point let me know Cheesy your bugs will phase me out by turn 3.

I nkow this was an old topic but was on the Fields of Blood blog and Pete Dunn gives a review of a cheap alternative for spray paint.
Not sure how to post up the link but it is worth a look.

The best one I've ever found (and I've tried a few) is 'Automotive Etch Primer'. Comes in a big can and is ~20bux. Gives the thinnest and strongest coat of primer I've ever seen, thats what its for.

I picked up some Dulux Matt black spray from M10 yesterday and I have found it to be just as good if not better than the GW Matt black, thanks for steering me in the right direction  Smiley

I just tried my first can of Army Painter Black Primer and I was dead impressed! Really smooth, better than GW's at only $15 from the local seller - Slave to Painting. It's $5 postage but that still works out cheaper than GW, especially if ordering more than one can!

Highly highly recommended!
