Hello there
i have not done anything to any of my collections of figures since november last year, but i love following the progress of you guys and your armys on this site.
I came into battlecry on sunday afternoon, because it is rare that i am in the city so i made the effort to come have a look.

and i loved what i saw....i had a wee nerdgasam and giggled like a school girl when i saw the tables, and the fun/intence nature of the tournament.
YES i'm a tournament virgin......
and i want this year to be the year i try my first tournament Grin

SO as i watched , i thought about my ragtag collection of mini's

I love Orks and always have, and i have about 1600 pt in boys and nobz no trucks or wagons just 2 converted looted imperial bask's
BUT there is no theme or connection in my army and had no inspiration on where or what to collect next.

So i want to build a tournament size army to a theme......and it was then i spotted some dice for sale at one of the trade stands and a colour skeme and theme came to mind.

A Death skulls army
for thouse that don't know they love the colour blue and have a tendency to love looting enemy vechicles, so lots of converions for me to do.
i'm thinking that i won't do a straight ork vehicle all the trucks will be open topped rihno's and chimeras, no battlewagons but converted baneblades or landy's

so its going to take awhile but my cut off point is next battlecry.
and to keep me motivated all the way over here on waiheke i decided to post my progress here.and maybe get some advice on the way Wink

so this weekend gone i tested out the colours and tried a few things.

here is a Deffkopter

and some Boyz trying face paint ideas and trying to make the choppers look old but recently sharpened with a angle grinder
also have changed the way i weather armour after reading the stormraven article on the GW website, first time painting checks as well
got a little crazy on one of the boyz gloves....won't be doing that again....i think

not sure on the painted skull on blade but i think it works on this dude

Im liking the scheme and weathering i would recommend giving the bases a wash. Some looked fine but the bottom 2 need the wash. Keen to see more

Yeah they look good, suitably dirty and orky looking without being garish and too brightly coloured, keen to see some vehicle conversions.

have listened and paid more attention to my bases. have been very busy this last month, with the arts festival and the fringe festival, which where both awesome.

But this weekend gone i decided to repaint one of my looted wagons and it went ok , spent alot of time playing with trying to get the rust right .
Came up with a bestial brown with a devalan mud and darwf bronze mix to wash it with Grin.

the bask was a second hand model that was covered in plaster of paris like a camo sheet. I did the first paint job on it when i first got back into 40k 2 years ago,
so this will be the 3rd layer of paint, but it adds to the orky ness of it.

yes i know there are tracks missing Wink, the amour plates are torn off a cheap tool box. if you look closely you can see grots in the engine room Grin

Im not sure about the black lines around my free painted glyphs Roll Eyes
i think it makes it cartoony, but that is orks anyway Tongue
oh and i cut the barrel in haif to make it more orkish.

C&C very welcome.

the gun is magnatised thanks my girlfriend buying me a surprise gift of magnets.
but i went one step further ( much to my son delight) i used a magnet base and made myself a exsplosion for when the vehicle exsplodes ( which i'm sure is going to happen ) i think it turned out alright, i built it on a wire frame, used painted balls of fleece. Grin

I like the over all feel of the vehicle, I would agree the black lines around the glyphs make it look a little too bright for my liking, but overall I think it looks very true to Orks.

Just go to websites like bolter and chainsword and go to the Tutorials they have written also, hit up the GW website that has good stuff too.

i would say yes although i have not read it. but if you feel you need a guide to start with its sounds like it would be a handy manual to have near by,plus i'm sure it would be full of colour idea's
i have got terrain ideas out of there terrain book .....but that was me seeing something while in the shop and going home and trying it Grin

i used to buy alot of white dwarfs (before the days of the internet) and i learnt the basics from thier painting classes in there. but then it became more of a cataloge and very exspensive to buy, which was when i decided to spend my money on figures not mags

I bought the book after painting for only 2 years and found nothing i didnt already know how to do. There is a bit on colour choice and the pictures of Golden Deamon models are great but otherwise waste of money. Also everything in the book you can get online for free and its generally done better. The best resource just as far as good painting guides is Lord of the Rings Battle Games in Middle Earth. I know its for lord of the rings but each week they build on what they did the last time and by the end of the series they show you how to paint stuff really well. Also you could probably get hold of the whole set for $40.

If i go into club sometime ill send you a message and u can borrow the Citadel painting book because right now its just gathering dust.

ok heres an update

i thought i would have the rhino/truck finished by now. I spent last weekend cutting things, shaving bits, and pinning this and that.
two deep cuts to my fingers later and the realisation that beer and modeling do not mix Tongue
i decided not to post photos of the convertion and go straight to painting,as you will see what i did anyway Wink

but all i got finished over the weekend(it was easter) was the interior.
i have removed the doors and the bolter at the back, smashed the computer's and put some bullet holes in the drivers door (imagine the orks trying to get  to the driver)
I also did some ork graffitti on the walls scratched in while on the way to battle Roll Eyes

but i also didn't get it finished this weekend because i started thinking about my HQ options, and with canopener coming up i wanted something fun
i started to work on a warboss adding a boss pole and an attack sguig.

and i wanted to have a go at my own wierdboy.
now i'm not very good at green stuff sculpting,But using a genestealers body as a base. I shaped a hunch back body chopped up and added a head and then cut strips of green stuff and wrapped him in mummy like rags (tomb kings anyone Grin )
I'm really happy with the results.

totally awesome conversions man, excellent stuff.  i dunno if you want to touch the weirdboy any more, but i reckon he'd look great with some pylons or bits of power cabling coming off his hunched back, or chains for restraining him when he's on down-time.

but that's not to detract from the work you've done on him, he looks totally awesome already

thanks dude.....total ly agree, but I'm not brave enough to try on this incarnation, as luck would have it i have about another 20 genesteallers to attempt further versions of this guy.
i need a name for him? he kind of reminds me of the Palpatine or Quasimodo.
the warboss reminds me of Dr DOOM. Tongue

OK had a bit of a break for a couple of weeks mainly me being pissed off with GW, but i figure i will finish this project no matter what and i can do it using 90% 2nd hand stuff so i today just finished my looted rihno.

i have changed my mind about using these as trucks, i think it confuses things so i will be building proper trucks as well finished this in the last hour lots of work.....maybe a little over painted Roll Eyes

Every thing is pinned....incl uding the ball to the chain, the last thing i did was pin the gretchin to the top.
BUT i forgot to place him first before drilling...... i acctually wanted him to be facing the gunner ......drilled the hole went to glue him and his foot was in the way of the rihno rather than drill another hole i just stuck him facing forward.

by the way i LOVE the grot models they have so much character Grin

last but not least i built the ram using plastic girders from GF9.
what you can't see in this photo but what i'm kinda proud of is the bolts i sliced off another orky part to glue to the girders just to make it look more real Wink

Personally anyone who refuses to play against trucks converted from Rhinos because they don't look 'Fast' enough is gonna have too much difficulty with the degree of abstraction GW games require to be any fun playing against anyway.

Use 'em as Trukks. They look like Trukks, and they look faster than the current Trukks anyway. If anyone complains, add bigger exhausts and some fuzzy dice to show them they'z fast.

Because looted wagons exist purely to provide BOOMGUNZ!

hmmmm might have to think about that, its more myself thinking that they don't look ramshackle enough to be loose and fast.
i do like the barely held together look of ork trucks........ its just when i finished the rihno it looked a bit more well built than what i imagnied a truck to be.
nice to meet you today peter by the way

Same, although you're tricky to recognize without your power klaw, threw me right off!

The kombi-rokkits you did up turned out brilliant, such simple conversions that you could easily miss the fact that they were converted in the first place, a lot better than my lacklustre attempt on a converted Heroquest Ogre (Fat Tony was popular for a time, but his kustom rokkit snapped off and he hasn't looked as fearsome since)
I'm gonna have to get a lick of paint on my BAngels during my pseudo-holiday and have a crack at your ladz, if they're up for a mutual slugfest

i would love to claim the kombi rokits as my own but alas.....they are the standard ones that come with the plastic nobz.....great kit but they have the uglyist sculpted heads esp when compared to the old metal ones.

would love to try and crush your pretty boy vampire marines, but would also like to try some ork on ork smack down.

i need to game more. Issac tabled me with his wolves on sunday

Do not, do NOT call them pretty-boy vampire marines. Old school BAngels knew what 'sinister' meant!

How'd Issac go about demolishing your Boyz? They're kinda good at being a point&click army, just throw them at the enemy and cackle maniacally at the slaughter =D

Hid when you should've charged?
The thing you must ALWAYS remember about Orks is there's a direct correlation between when they CAN charge and when they SHOULD charge =P

You did NOT just bring up the Golden Nipples. That's where you hook up the jumper leads to kick-start an ass-kicking

I'll be at cityguard on the 26th... if you can make it, Fabio von Shineynips wants words with your warboss.
They'll be onomatopoeic words like "WHACK" and "STAB", but I'm certain your boss can read gratuitous violence Cheesy
