Test Daemonette

After mucking around for a very long time I finally finished a test mini for the small chaos force Phil has asked me to paint. I've never done anything chaos before, so it was interesting. I initally did two different miniatures. This one in purple and then another with a very tan skin. The reds were the same, but the armor and weapon was painted in silver. While I did like the look of the second one I decided that this one stood out more, and it had more of a demon feel to it... Especially the bone armor and weapon.
Anyway, as long as Phil likes the colors I guess that's all that matters...
Oh! And Phil made the bases. Soon as I saw them I knew they had to be Lava themed. Hope that was OK Phil ^_^

Maybe on a few of them... That's a nice mini to show it off though, is it yours?

Anyway, another test Daemon, this time a Bloodletter; My second foray at using inks rather than paints. As a method of speed painting through a few units using inks for basecoats over a white undercoat works very well... I'm trying to decide whether I like the horns as they are or if I should go all black... The sword requires multiple layers of the same colors to get the right brightness, as the one here is far to dull to be a flaming sword... I might ink the sword next time as well and then touch it up and see how that works...
Not quite sure what I want to do with the base, more lava / orange might be redundant... If anyone has any ideas shout out...
And that's that. Old School Daemonettes start tomorrow...

dark browns or greys for the base may do the trick. i personally would vote for all black horns, be a nice contrast compared to the light orange-y of the bloodletter.
good work man, inks on a white basecoat is something i want to try on too

Mmmm a few techniques I might steal here, ink on white base coat might work well for lava bases like that Vulkan mini linked there, also source lighting. Good stuff.
Like both of those mini's using inks really leaves maximum detail which is all good, doesn't fill in the join areas in the model though like you can do with paint.

Thanks guys. I have decided to do the horn in black as well as the hooves and nails. As for using inks to do the lava; I totally agree, it'll look much more smooth than the current one with the daemonette so expect to see that ^_^

Wow, first things first let me just say that Batch painting is truly a sucky thing, it takes all the fun out of watching a miniature come alive before your eyes and distorts it so that you feel you're getting nothing done, plus you slack off and don't take as much care as you should. That being said, I don't know if painting in ones and twos would be any easier... Just longer...
These came out OK, I've missed bits and pieces and they still need to be sealed. For these guys it's going to be gloss, (shocking I know). I think the slight sheen will give them a little more zing, especially the lava, which I think has turned out OK... Ink is fun, but it can be sticky and messy so if you choose to use it make sure you have some paper towels handy... and old clothes on...
Couldn't get all of them to fit against my backgrounds so I had to use a white drop sheet instead, sucks all the light out of the shot... Oh well... Can't win them all... I think I'm going to treat myself to painting a single figure next. Maybe RP's Space Marine... I think that would be a good break from batch painting stuff...
As always I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment or constructive criticism.

the only thing i have issue with bloodletters, and it has nothing to do with you painting ability, is how the heads join together. so many minis have that nasty join line, and it seems like a fault of the model design to have it get assembled like that.

Blame the guy who assembled them (ie: Me). My excuse is that I didn't have the superglue that fills gaps but thats all about to change as my order from overseas arrives tomorrow or da next day...yeahhhh!!!

I'll bring them on Sunday so you can have a gander, as for my accident; I'm fine, my car is still in the shop

I can flick you the link I used to start;
Blamo!
Now I've used smooth GS for my lava where he went with a rougher sort, but his tutorial gives you the basics on how to start it. It took a lot of playing around for me to be happy with it, and I'm still not 100% satisfied, but my formula was:
1: Do anything black first. IE the rocks, then dry brush it.
2: Yellow ink - Let dry
3: 3:1 mix of scab red and red ink is put around the black rocks
4: 3:1 mix of yellow ink and Blazing orange is then put right over the red and pulled away from black stone. This should be done as soon as possible after step 3, mixing the red and the orange. The red should stay close to the black...
5: Add yellow around the edges where the "lava" is meant to be the hottest.
*sigh* looking over this I don't think I've been much help... I could show you on Sunday if you wanted? It might be easier to see it like that?

Yeah, they do seem to require a little bit of prep work, which I haven't done (sorry Phil)...

nah its not phil's fault either, its just the sign of a gnarly model. seen it on other project logs, and why should you bother to make sure there's smooth joins on such an obvious spot? especially when you have to do it to 15+ models?

Hmmm someone suggested I do some in Ice blue as if they were frozen and I gotta say, I do like the idea, however I'm a touched concerned. Would it look mismatched if I field half an army with Fire / Lava theme and the other half Ice / Snow theme? Should I keep them all in one style with Lava on their bases and fire-gems and the like?

That decision should be based on what the rest of the army looks like. You could probably pull it off, if your doing 4 seasons in one day, but most of the time that sort of thing just comes out looking miss-matched.
I tried a similar thing with Chaos warriors, one unit for each mark. That just looked like I'd dregged the bottom of the barrel. But then my painting does leave a little to be desired...
Forgot to mention... Your painting is awesome as usual, makes me a like embarassed to bring mine to the club

I tend to like keeping my daemons all under the one colour scheme cause I like the army to look uniform but its up to personal taste really.
