Alrighty, finally got around to starting my Sanguinary Guard. I was tempted to try some NMM, and I still might on my last guy, but for now it's my standard method of gold... It always seems to take me ages to paint anything, and the multiple layers of washes doesn't help at all...

Which paints/washes do you use and how do you use them to get that shade of gold?

Vents Gold:

Undercoat Black
Basecoat Boltgun Silver
Apply two layers of Burnished Gold - This will look very thin and hardly very deep, even after the second coat.
Wash 1 Devlan Mud - Applied across all gold, leave a little bit extra in the recesses.
Wash 2 Orgyn Flesh - Applied across all gold, leave a little bit extra in the recesses.
Wash 3 Badab Black - Applied in recesses only.

Takes awhile, but I like the result. if you want more of a bronze you can add a red wash in there as well.

Yeah, but gold's a funny color to highlight. for small things I usually go with a mix of Burnished gold and Mithril silver which can go all the way up to mithril silver if you want an extreme highlight. I'm not sure how that'll look on such a large surface area... Might have to give it a try and see ^_^

yeah i got introduced to doing a mix of shining gold and mithril for highlighting things - i usually just hax my gold, simple coat of shining gold drenched in devlan mud and gryphon sepia and leaving it at that.  makes it more bronze though.

shit's looking good mike

and i can't wait to see the same treatment done to some of those golden nipple marines.

ohh question how are u doing the white.

1) 1:1 mix of Astronomican Grey (Foundation) and Fortress Grey. Water down. Do three thin coats to cover the black undercoat
2) Thinned wash of Asurmen Blue all over the wings. Make sure you get the recesses.
3) Light dry-brush of Fortress grey. This is very light, and make sure you only go with the wings, not back up.
4) Super light dry-brush of White. I use p3 Black and white, but I'm sure Skull white will do the job. Again, go with the wings.

And you're done! Like everything I do it seems to be a crap load of work ^_^

ANYWAY! Day two of my Sanguinary Guard test model. Things are coming together quite nicely. I've gone with black stoned fire gems because I find them easier to do and I feel it gives the miniature a little more zing. The wings look quite good, a little dry-brushing error on my part on some of the larger feathers, but they look alright. Power-sword is in silver. I totally screwed up the blue, and I mean totally, so it looks a little patchy...

Just got the chapter banner to add and the mini will be done. Some of the highlights are a little washed out because of the light I used for the photo, but I couldn't be assed getting the whole thing set up for WiP Photos... I'm lazy like that ^_^

The gems looks great. Would be inclined to work the face a lot more - very flat and as a focal point not that interesting. Not digging the flat white on the sword hilt although that may be the angle of the shot.

I reckon the wings have enough room to layer and highlight as opposed to dry-brushing. They are such a wonderful feature of the model. Working in some more subtle transitional greys before direct white highlighting would give them great depth.

Tell me you're going to cover that green-stuff on the base with something! Anything! Looks like he's landed in freshly spat out chewing gum.
