WHFB at Can Opener 2010

I've had the go-ahead from President Nick to run this one. Here's the plan:


- 1500pt armies

- 4 rounds

- the focus of the tournament is first and foremost to collect canned goods for the Auckland City Mission Winter Appeal. Players will bring a MINIMUM of 3 cans of food (for human consumption)

- cans will have an in-game advantage of providing the reroll of a single dice for each can submitted to the TO. No limit to the number of cans that can be used in a game. I'll give a range of examples in the player's pack but you can avoid miscasts, cause IF casting, reroll armour/ward/regen saves etc. It's important players understand the point above and that Warhammer Fantasy can still be fun even if you muck around with a mechanic like rerolls AND still be an event where you can expect good competition for rankings points. When I ran the 40k event a couple of years ago the capacity for rerolls was directly corelative to the amount of hilarity and the enjoyment of the game. I'm hoping Warhammer generals can prove they have at least as much of a sense of humour as the 40k crowd.

- having waxed lyrical about having a "sense of humour" I'm not so stupid as to want a series of ridiculous scenarios. It worked for 40k; it won't work for Fantasy. All rounds will be pitched battles.

- it will contribute 80% of the rankings points that would normally be offered for a 5-round event (check here if you're confused about what this means)

- a combination of VP-tiering (as per Equinox but with adjusted "gaps" to account for the change in points level) and simple army specific and generic hard caps. Hopefully these will not be too mind-bending! I'll post up my list soon (I'll be playing) to give you an idea about what I'd like to see. I'm not interested in a comp-debate for what is at heart a charitable event

- the expectation from me is that attendees will, despite the hard-capped comp nature of the event, aim for a middle ground/moderate stance when building their armies. I reserve the right to veto a list that is obnoxious if I can save you from yourself and the hate you will receive taking something hideous. Having said that, it's not FluffyCon. Think of this as a preparing the "right mindset" for Fields of Blood in September

- don't expect awesome (or any) prizes of note. We're playing to give, not to receive

- tournament entry prices will be set by the City Guard Exec but I anticipate entry cost will be minimal (covering Hall hire and not much else)

Sign me up, i'm all about the charity even though I don't own any armies that shine at low points values.  If my dad posts me the digital camera back in time I might actually film a short documentary about the event - focusing on a bizzarre social phenomon, that is; a fusion of wargaming and charity.  If you would like to make yourself available for an interview, if you have a big mouth (looking at you rion) feel free to let me know.

Allowing re-rolls to be re-rolled potentially allows for more cans to be collected. Which is the goal of this event.

Won't be any painting scoring. Just battle and sports (comp being added into battle).

I’ll email this around to anyone I think might be interested. I’m guessing that holding Can Opener the weekend before Tin Soldier is either just bad planning or miscommunicati on. Either way it’s hard to see many people turning up to a one-dayer (I can’t fathom exactly how I got the leave pass for it myself! Just awesome I suppose…) so I’m not expecting massive attendance. Waiting for Exec to put an entry fee on this (or not… completely unsure what’s happening there).

I’ll be asking for registrations of interest – anything less than 10 players is a waste of time as far as I’m concerned and I can’t afford to burn a leave pass if this is the case.

Focus of the event – 4 fun games for every player against very reasonable armies in the name of charity, honour and good will.


General restrictions

Max 5 power dice (including bounds which count as one each) per phase
Max 4 dispel dice and one scroll (not including magic resistance) per phase
Max 30 infantry/cavalry with ranged attacks
Max 2 warmachines (bolt throwers are NOT 2-for-1 choices for any army - a single bolt thrower will take up a single Special or Rare slot)
No Terror-causers
No duplicate Specials for any army
Max two duplicate Core choices (except Daemons who may NOT take duplicate choices)
At least two unit standards must be included in the army
No magical standards of any kind
Max 100pts spent on magic items/gifts

That’s it. In the interest of simply not caring there will be no comp score for this event. If you go hard and rort the system you a) need to get a life – it’s a charity event and you’ve misread the intention of the tournament, and b) need to be prepared to lose the respect of your fellow players. I will not be collecting in lists for checking – make sure they are correct. If you get it wrong and someone notices you’ll have to change it on the day (which will probably mean deleting the offending unit and just playing with a points handicap).

Basically every army should have a bit of everything to take part in all phases.

Have a look at my army list if you are still confused about what sort of list you should be taking.


Finally please note the following requirements for 1500pt games in this event – ALL armies are limited to/must have:

1-3 Heroes
2+ Core
0-3 Specials
0-1 Rare

There is no General-killing bonus.
Unit standards are worth 50VPs if captured.
Battle standards are worth 100VPs if captured.
To capture a table-quarter a unit must be unit strength 5 or more AND be worth more than 100pts at the start of the game. Captured quarters are worth 100VPs.


There is no battle points table. Scoring will be your aggregate total of raw VPs collected from games throughout the event.

There is no swiss chess draw for this event. You will be matched up against a random opponent in every round.

TK should be the softest race of this event :O

I thought so too but most players will have 3DD and maybe a scroll so 5PD of incantations from TKs will still get that critical spell off when you need it. And if you have the Jar and can kill off an (or rather, the) enemy caster early on (with say... a Scorpion...) you can apply the blowtorch in the end game like you normally would. Only major issue is no Tomb King so limited Chariots and if you take a big unit of Tomb Guard you'll get a kick in the nuts for being an ass.

-TK can't abuse re-rolls when it comes to break tests
-nobody will miscast (if they are charitable), but IF will crop up more
-TK can't take a king to the event, and no duplicate specials
-Rerolling incantations won't be very useful with the low magic available
-TK shooting with re-rolls factored in won't be powerful thanks to 5+ to begin and low str
