Heya all,

Just a quick question on Resin basing, I've got some bases coming from Iron Halo, I've had recommendation s to attach the models to the bases with superglue before painting and for heavy metal models pin them for security.

Two questions, how do you do yours? I was thinking to paint them first, but gluing paint to paint isn't a good idea and I'm thinking of attaching first then painting afterwards now.

Also I have a 1mm hobby handdrill, where do you get metal pins small enough for pinning metal models etc?

Cheers

I use paper clips for mine and cust them up, strong and easy to bend to shape, then i just use a 1mm drill in the base and model

Good to see you're supporting NZ made. Not that I have that much of a clue on pinning and resin, but heres my 2c. Superglue or epoxy metal or plastic after a quick wash in slight soapy water (let dry of course). You can use paper clips, Pins (sewing kind) or buy the bronze expensive stuff from hobby shops.

Sounds like your army is really coming together fella. Will have to see you on the battle field sometime.

The brass rods aren't that expensive and are better than paper clips in terms of durability. Plus you can use them for spear shafts, and 100,000,000 other things too (maybe)...

Yeah most paper clips these days are aluminium at best I find, I could hunt around for some steel paper clips I guess. Otherwise I might visit a hobby shop for some brass ones.

IRT Wouster; They still have a very long way to go, most only have a base coat on, I'm going pretty hardout and spending couple hours every day to ensure they get sorted, my painting skills are slowly slowly improving.

Yeah if you want to spark up some 40K I'll be keen for a game,I just cannot make the club due to work.

I pin all my models to their resin bases, using paperclips. Most get a pin in 1 leg, cavalry and other heavier models get one in each leg. Of the models that I haven't pinned to their bases, 3 out of 5 have fallen off...
I pin before undercoating.

I use bog standard paper clips for all my pinning - and yet to have any negative issue with them.  They bend nicely when required (better than brass or steel etc - which are best used for spear shafts if going that route), and when converting adding greenstuff and superglue (I use selleys super glue gel) have had no problems at all.

Yet to ever wash a resin model/base too...  don't know what thats all about.  Seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle to me.

(Mind you I've yet to ever strip a model either...  are they the same as other girls underneath?  errr  I mean..   oops   Embarrassed  )

i've been using safety pins, got a whole pack of different sizes for $6 ....they are stainless steal and i have used the thicker ones for the heavier mini's ( my mega nobs )and the smaller ones for my plastic weapon conversions. they clip off just the same as paper clips. have a question though is resin easy to paint on,it seem's most of forge worlds stuff is resin.is that true

Cheers for the info everyone, looks like I'll be pining my mini's to the bases to avoid drama's later on.

I have another question also, do you still pin the plastic mini's as well? also does plastic glue work on Resin? cheers.

some models i just glue right on with hot stuff and no bother strong hold. some i needed to pin like my gaunts and stealers due to not much surface area covered to get a nice bond with the glue.

I pin metal miniatures.

I wash the bases and then mark the pin locations on the base, then I drill the holes on both the feet and the base. I attach the pins using GS around the hole and the pin. I normally put the pins in the base first and then attach the miniature to it afterwards.

yeah that makes the most sense, unfortunately I'm not going to have time to do this before battlecry, but on the bright side battlecry has kicked my arse and I've made more painting progress in the past 3 weeks than I have in the past 6 months Cheesy

I got a roll of 1mm wire from Placemakers for $10. It cuts reasonably easily, and it's flexible enough to persuade angles for GS-filled joints.

For most pinning, you're only after shear (sideways) strength anyways, so it's whatever will fit in the hole.

Ahhh nice, good tip there mate.

I'll visit the local placemakers, sounds like best value for money I'd say and not too much stuffing around.

Yeah, I couldn't resist, warehouse stationary sold a pack of good quality NZ made paper clips for about $3, can get a decent amount of pin length sections from each clip and it has approx. 200 so does the trick unless it's some massive troop army.
