um....always start with a darker shade than you want and dry brush up lighter shades, each level being a little lighter (this doe's not mean add white to the orignal colour learn what makes up a colour{see colour wheel}) ,look up "colour wheel" and learn how to mix colours.(some reds being more blue than yellow etc {just look up colour wheel}) its a good way to start. then think about using washes or inks to get into the crevices of the mini to create more depth.GET A DAMN GOOD FINE BRUSH......and a hardy dry brush. sorry did this post late and ....maybe a little drunk(my band just did a halloween gig) hehehe

Water down your paints. Allot of people don't when they start and it makes for thick and lumpy paint jobs, take your time and don't worry if they don't look like they do in the books.

Try for neat paint jobs where you cleanly paint each part 1 color. Don't paint over 5 models at a time.

Also start by spraying your mini's with undercoat.

Every ones first army looks bad but it's where you start(my first one was shocking)!

couldn't agree more.....less is better when first starting..and less also means on the brushes. use only the tip of your brushes with paint and that includes drybrushing(the technique of wiping off nearly all the paint off your brush, and gently going over the raised areas. just in case you are really starting out and did not know).

I just bluetack all my riders to their horses, but to be honest it's starting to get annoying, as it takes so much longer to set up my army before the game. I would recommend against it.

If you do want to do it, bluetack is easier than pinning because you don't have to worry about getting the right rider for the right horse.

IMO at that point it becomes much easier to just pony up for a Sabol Case, theres not a lot that won't fit into those cases (Read: almost nothing) and if you magnetise your trays you can just pull them out and plop them on the table.

Best thing is I've dropped my case down a flight of stairs filled with metal multipeice Warmachine models and nothing broke, at all, and I don't pin my models anymore.

is it better to paint in a production line. (doing the same part of all the models one after the other) ie bows faces legs

or is it better to do one model then move on to the next one

whats the general jist on it

Production line. Do a few models (say 5) at a time in a production line style. I find painting the largest section of the model first then the smaller sections easier. For example with my Plague Monks, I paint their robes first since that's almost the whole model. Then I paint the other parts like hands, weapons etc. That way, I can use a larger brush and be less careful when painting the robes.

I find production line the best style, with anything between 5 and 10 models. I paint one colour at a time, rather than one piece at a time. I used to paint largest bit / most fun bit first, but now I paint from the inside out - skin first, then clothes etc, and find that it cuts down a lot on the amount of touch ups I have to do.

another good reason for production line is that if you have mixed colours you wont waste paint.
its a pain when you move on to mini number two or three, and the shade you mixed is all dried up. mix enough paint for all the models and paint all of thouse sections (skin, hair, armour) the great thing about doing lots of ten is by the time you have finished number ten,the first mini is dry.and the colour can some times darken/change once dry.
