What was your first Army? did you buy it new or 2nd hand and did you paint it yourself?

My first was Empire. bought new and self-painted - extremely bad paint job (as opposed to the average bad work I do now)

High Elves, when I was 10/11... 3rd/4th edition warhammer... mix of new + second hand miniatures.  My first list was pretty much 20 archers, 20 spearmen, led by Tyrion.

my first army was actually 3rd (maybe 4th) wood elves, got them in 1989 or 1990 played them for 2 or so years before trading them for a 2nd hand orc and goblin army (which i still use).

Good thread idea!

First army was actually Eldar about 7 years ago. Then I sold up and bought into WHFB, a real man's game. Most of it was bought new and painted by me.

Played space crusade and hero quest heaps since I was 12-13, started my first army in 2009 which is a Space Marine and Sisters of Battle mixed list, still in progress but the painting is below average, it's all part of learning though.

My first army was Space Marines! My brother got the third edition starter set for Christmas; I painted the Marines because he liked the Dark Eldar. Smiley I expanded on them quite a bit and then started an Eldar army, things spiraled out of control from there untill I gave up the hobby due to no-one to play with (my brother couldn't be bother'd)... several years later I thought I'd put my dusty Imperial Guard army to use when I discover'd City Guard...

Whilst my painting has progress'd, my early painting wasn't that bad, which probably stems from the fact that I had painted (and still do) model aeroplanes for years and years, where those that know a thing or two about good hair grooming know that all the real modellers lie. Cool Tongue

Unfortunately not. However, I do have plans to build a new one based around the IG codex.

Picked up High Elves mid 6th edition initially just for the hobby side of things. Found out the game wasn't too bad so played about 20 odd games before a long hiatus. Picked it back up when I moved up to Auckland and have been trying to get regular games in for the last year or so. Still have my painted HE and most of my second hand HE army I've sold on so everything is my painting bar a couple of eagles.

Looking forward to the biggest event and my 4th tournament ever this coming weekend!

Me too!

Seriously though, it will come as no surprise to those that know me that WE were my first army. I got interested when I was 11, just around the time they had a small pdf book released. Been playing them ever since Smiley
I only really started playing when the Simisters moved next door and they found out I had some warhammer! From then on if I wanted a game all I had to do was walk to the end of the drive.

I bought the army new and second hand over a long time and painted it myself. When the new models came out it all got replaced, apart from the Dryads and Great Eagles.

Started with DE's my bro has always played VC.

Me my bro and my good mate from school started playing all at the same time then we met nick at the Lake BBQ and been war gaming since.

Most of the skills I have now come from playing WE's and VC's over a long long long time.

My first army was Epic Orks almost 20 years ago.

Somehow I migrated to Genestealers, but when you have a -2" movement penalty for carrying heavy weapons, they didn't go terribly far.

Then new rules came out and I couldn't use my Leman Russ, so I traded it for the beginnings of my VC army.

Sold the Genestealers but got into Chaos Marines, but looking at getting rid of them now.

But the VC's are going strong. I'm looking at doing a themed army to peak sometime next year. Not as much conversion needed as Gobtonnia, but it should be almost as screwball.

WW2 Matchbox Brits for WRG 1st edition I think

1st Warhammer Army was Dwarves (still have them), think that was 2nd or 3rd edition. Although remember playing 1st edition Ziggaraut of doom scenario with dwarves, and some medieval knight army of some sort for WRG 7th edition Ancients.
