My awesome new bases from Micro Arts Studio have shown up way earlier than expected.  This is fantastic news - I ordered them ground mail, so I was expecting to wait two months or something insane.  It took 3-4 weeks.  They are a little rough with loose/excess plastic but nothing that can't be cleaned up.  Boy this army is going to look awesome.

No pics yet, wait until tomorrow when i've done some assembly.  I'll be updating this thread as I go.  It's a warriors of chaos army i'm working on, the most notable features of which are a daemon prince, and two units of warriors each armed with halberd/shields and great weapons respectively.  These are sub-optimal choices in terms of tournaments and competition I feel, but that is irrelevant - I like the models and their style on the field, so that is what I am going with.  Hopefully nobody feels obliged to turn this into a bash luke's army list thread at any point Cheesy  My High Elves will be responsible for all tournament winning duties as far as the near future is concerned.

Stay tuned - pictures imminent.

Apparently the Daemon Prince model in the WoC book (in the painted models section) is a model due to be released with "second wave" Daemon releases...  might be worth waiting for?  Looks pretty cool

I heard that too, and would be really keen.  Otherwise I will just use belakor - my friend has one that i'm trying to talk him into selling, we'll see.  GW is doing their mailorder deal too as you've pointed out.

I'll be using an undivided daemon prince.  Ok here they are.  The special great weapon metal add-ons have to be bought from gw direct, and you only get ten of them.  So I had to convert a little using bits from the knights sprues.

Below: A bunch of badass motherf*ck$rs

Below: One of my favourites - pinched a head from the knight sprue

Below: you can see my super crappy glue, and a unit of marauders i'm working on - based them before the 'real' bases actually showed up.

Below: Enough skulls?

Below: The bases come out a little rough as you can see.  Should be alright after they are cleaned up and painted though.

The bases do look a bit rough but should look ok with a lick of paint on them.

Have you pinned the warriors to the base?

Ditch that crapy glue and get some plastic glue

Resin doesn't take crappy plastic glue (I hate the stringy shit plastic glue makes)

$2 shop Superglue can be the best on the market but you need to get the blue tubed stuff, IIRC its branded "Tickey". I've been making metal models for a long time now and I can categorically say Tickey is the best I've ever used especially when cost effectiveness is taken into account.

I'll only use the Yellow and Black stuff for basing.

It occurs to me that one money saving measure could be to only use your skull bases on the outer models of the unit...  and the inner models with "standard" bases with maybe a couple of skulls on them...

Not only for the cost saving aspect either...

It will also help your movement trays look "less out of place" (being that you won't have the edges of those covered in skulls as with the bases?)

It will also aid (IMO) in making the skulls more of a highlight rather than an overkill...  I find Mystic's bases to be a little on the "too busy" side - which doesn't help the look of an army and detract from the models rather than enhancing them (which should be the aim of basing).

Maybe I should have mentioned this before you ordered?   Cool

Even ..  *muses*  if you use paved bases on the inner models...  creating a "moat of skulls" with the outer models..  and then your movement trays can have grassed/rocky edges indicating the outer edge of the "temple platform" as it meets the ground (if you get what I mean).  Grin

hmmm... moat of skulls, I like that.  At any rate I bought the MAS bases before it occurred to me that I could just buy the gw pack of skulls and make my own bases.  Still, the MAS bases are perfect and create just the right look.  The models aren't pinned on and will come off easily, i'll cross that bridge when I come to it - i'm very lazy.

Simon i'll tell you how much the bases are on sunday when you are bashing my high elves.  I'm too embarassed to post a number.  You'll all think that I am nuts.  I barely got enough bases to do half the army even after the amount I spent.

Nuts is how much I have thus far spent on my Daemon army, its bases and conversions...  suffice to say it's going to be by far my best ever painted army if $$ is taken into account  Undecided

hence I prefer to term it as "an investment in enjoyment"   Grin

I know they are very expensive Cool, I bought some from imperial games before they shut down.
I just wanna know if getting the bases from MAS directly is cheaper than imperial games.

Yup - now THATS the nuts part!  hehe

@ Ry ..  thats a large part of my motivation...  Slann as daemonic hosts...  lizzie spawning pools producing demonic spawn  hehe

best we get back on topic though  Shocked

What are you thinking of using in regards to larger (ie 50mm) bases Master Vaul?

Micro Arts supply them as well.  If I don't decide to go with those, i'll just use the pack o' skulls kit from gw and stick em on my chariot/daemon prince bases.

Well my first attempt at a colour scheme was interesting, I went with black, a few black highlights, touched it up here and there with some black.  Black base too, check it out:

Thought I may as well try this one out as well.  I'm going for a 'baroque' look, see if you think I achieved it.  Probably gonna redo the base, looks a bit pinkish and scab red is the only red I have on hand, I should really go blood red or gore.

Pretty good. Perhaps to improve you could think about adding some bright colour to act as a focal point on the model... i.e., somewhere for your eye to be drawn naturally. I just think the muted colour palate alone may not get the close looks you're aiming for.  Grin

i think that came out nice, i dont like the red base. I would go more of a bleach to brighten the overall model.

Given that you want an Undivided look to the Warriors (they do look quite bland but a strong accent colour could be tricky to implement without being distracting or garish) and you've spent a heinous amount of money on the bases - why not make more of the bases?

Don't be a slack troll and give them a flat wash - go all out and have glowing eye sockets and reflected light. Feather a light drybrush out from the eye sockets onto the lower parts of the model.

Thats a cool idea.

And maybe some patterns on the armour (black or dark purple/blue, but i'm also red green colour blind, so I'm not the best to suggest colours)? Just a few swirls for the normal guys, more for the champs and full armour for the heroes? Wait, Dibs! I'd like to try it.  Tongue

I am indeed going to be reworking the bases - will be using a 'bloodier' shade of red, highlighting it up a bit, and making the skulls themselves whiter.  As for the model colour scheme itself, probably more of the same but a little brighter - intricate details are harder for me to do but if I can get my hands on a better detail brush i'll probably give it a shot.  I'm inspired by some of the stuff in the WOC book.

Gotta couple of night-time photos here so the lighting isn't good, but you get the idea of what is going on.  I've tried out a much brighter (blood red) shade on the base and just drybrushed the skulls up with skull white.  It is certainly more eyecatching, but less serious and sinister.  I'm not sure whether I ultimately want a 'dark' feel to the miniature or not.  On one hand the brighter red looks sicklier which I am not a fan of, but it is less 'plausible' and more fantasy, which I am a fan of.  See what you think.  The tone of things actually is quite different in real life.

Below: also with a knight assembled and on base, can't wait to paint that guy

Below: closer comparison
