ha ha, can't be bothered, some grass will do. I've actually stopped putting "materials" onto bases until I started with DKK. Most of my later Tau and Necron models only got thinnly painted bases...

You should do some highlighting if you can, it would help make the edges stick out more on the tank itself, same with some highlighting on the troops themselves.
And yeah Laz is right, would be heaps tidier if the grass was just on the top instead of spilling off the sides, otherwise it's good enough to game with.

try dunking a wash all over these guys - so far you've stayed in the lines and things seem neat enough and i think they'd really benefit from having a decent coating of devlan mud all over them to create better contrast and detailing.
tis quick and easy too

So how do ya apply washes?! Do you just buy "wash paints" from GW? Do you dunk them straight in like a nerd in the school toilet? Or do you apply them with a brush?

yeah the GW washes are pretty expensive, so there might be some cheaper alternatives. all you do is load a brush up liberally with Devlan Mud or the black wash and swab it all over your guys
i cover everything of mine with devlan mud and work over detail again, its nice and quick and easy to all heck

The first time I tried that with a black wash, it just painted the model black. Thin it out first

is this the new washes? because i've found that the devlan mud and gryphonne sepia washes too be too light for my liking :s or that its effects aren't apparent at first glance, unlike the old inks.

Look at my marines and epic orks, on my scouts i use two coats of gryphonne sepia drying in between to get the pants looks nice, and with my epic orks i give the two washes of black and they look sweet. Some areas might need touching up on but my scout pants i just left bleach base with two washes.
Also get a wash darker than your base but try and keep the same color. like blue on blue and green on green so on. brown on similar tones.
I dont normally use the back but i gave it a try on my ork body armor and looks good that used a green wash on the skin. And yes prices do add up i have gone though about 5 pots of wash and blue on my marines so far. Thats about 70 bucks on paint but hay nothing compared to my over all paint selection of about 50 pots.

looking at the palette he's used i think he could get away with just using devlan mud though. no need to get the different colours - different case from your marines off course

Just give the one layer of black wash and they will look all good. or dip them but that is probably more work.

I put @#$% load of water into a tray and mixed some chaos black and dabbed em over my necrons back when I first started that army. Is that considered "washing"? If so then I think I probably should go on the safe side and use watery dark grey on my dkk?

nah, watered down paint won't work like the washes will, better to go for the product that's designed specifically for this - the pigment in paint will be diluted, but end up almost clumping in odd areas, not resting smoothly in recesses and whatnot

a pot is 7 buck i think? same as the regular pots of paint. it'll go a long way though, considering you might want to water it down

Infact it's what got me into 40k in the first place! Saw this cool looking box in a old comic book store in Panmure and then expanded from there... I may just have to wash em upside down!

try using fine sand for the bases, painted the right colour, like a dark grey, it will go well with your army, and then add little patches of static grass. I got sand from mitre 10 mega, just scooped it off the floor under the bags of sand, it was free.

I used to get them from the local primary school's sandpits (I hope there were no urine in them...) but they got rid of the sandpits Anyway, too lazy to get rid of the grass now. Maybe put some sand on the next batch I get. I still need probably another 60 troopers.
