In case anyone is wondering about picking up WM as a side game as we've seen a fair few guys do that lately, I've picked up a Boxed Set and started a new army, keeping tabs and popping on the Kiwithralls Blog from time to time might be good to see just how easy it can be.

So far I've picked up The Mercenary Starter Box: Gorten Grundback

Which Gives Me:
Warcaster Gorten Grundback
Grundback Gunner Light Warjack x3
Ghordson Driller Heavy Warjack

And a fully playable army.

Retails for $90, I got it for $30 second hand and Stripped the paintwork back with 'Simple Green' which you can find at Bunnings.

I'm planning to use the 'Searforge Commission Contract' which allows only Rhulic Dwarven and Ogrun Mercenary units, Its not regarded as a particularly strong choice with regard to list composition but has a real cool theme and the plain utilitarian looks of the Iron Kingdoms Dwarves have always been calling to me. I think I can make the army work in MkI with some pretty helpful internet rescources and in the 2nd edition Beta thats been released so I'm pretty confident nothing will change about my army come Jan when the book releases. Even if something does change, none of the models will loose their rules so I'll still be covered.

I've picked up the Starter Box to give me a good few starter games to get my head around my Warcaster and then I can slowly assemble and paint further additions for bigger pts values while keeping the motivation up by playing games.

So far I've managed to re-assemble them with a bit of creative basing which you can see here on the Blog. Nothing Terribly exciting but a very neccessary step.

I'll post short updates here and more in depth reporting can be found on the Blog.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've finally started painting with my Warcaster Gorten as he'll form the basis for what the entire army will look like. I'm using the P3 range for the colours as I haven't yet found a range that beats them in covering or their ability to be manipulated into glazes and feathered highlights. I'll be using the good old GW boltgun Metal and Washes for the steel metals though because Boltgun Metal is a Classic and still hasn't been beat IME.

You can find pics and a little more rambling here on the blog.

In a flurry of updates I managed to make some progress and Gorten is starting to look a bit more alive.

I'm liking the challenge of keeping an entire model in warm tones so I don't focus the model on a gem or glow (or sunnies in this case). I'm slowly closing in on the real test for this model, the weathering and with no small amount of trepidation, I've never been any good at weathering but we'll give it a go.

A bit more rambling and some pics are here on the blog.

Thanks, the P3 yellows are a real credit to their line. Two thinned coats over a grey primer and black wash is epic quick.

The P3 line as a whole goes over black primer in one coat, even the reds can cover in one coat. Saying that you'll pretty much want to thin them and make two coats to get a better finish but 2 coats is pretty damn quick.

The coolminiornot Store has P3 singles for approx. NZ$3.75 each and charges a flat $7 shipping aswell. They deliver in a week and a half to two weeks which is pretty decent for international and come highly reccomended if you wanted to pick up some singles, Vags only stocks Boxes.

And finally a big push through the tricky new bit and we're done. I went more in depth with the detail on the blog this time so skip on over there for finished pics and a bit of a breakdown.

A couple of days might go before I have more progress on the Dwarves, I have some othe models I should make some progress on for Ian and I'll take a break from tricky new techniques to finish some of my Hordes Circle for my game with Simon this Sunday and no doubt I'll be a bit inspired by that to paint a Circle model or two after. I'll definitely be priming up a jack or two soon though.

I'll stick Gorten and the jacks in my case tomorrow so if anyone wants to have a look at the real thing not blury photos just stroll by and let me know.

Its explained in more detail on the blog but essentialy its just tapping the armour with a brush and brown paint and then using the other weathering techniques on the blog on those chips.

With speed unbeleivable for me theres another post on the blog with some progress made into the Jacks, all three Light Jacks basecoated in a single night, go team!

The colour breakdowns are in the earlier blog posts if anyone is curious and I'll definitely have to do a step by step on the basing seeing as that seemed to draw a fair bit of attention.

Nearly finished painting the highlights on my first light jack last night (sweet jebus do I wish I got more painting time).

Check it out and give me some input:

"Having seen them all lined up and now closing on the finish line with the first one they all seem a bit samey even with the repose, looks like paintwork is going to have to make up the personality. I have some ideas like a blaster with an extra exhaust next to the head that looks conveniently like a cigar but I just can't come up with anything that will differentiate them enough with just paint."

Thanks Simon, Its taking a torturously long time to finish these things even for me, but I've only got 3 more models to go before game time anyway.

I've started the weathering and detailing on the first light and even managed to magnetise the gun so check out the blog people.

Well I certainly can't play to save myself so I have to be able to do something decently  Wink

It is a good thing to be able to paint a few models and rock up for a game, certainly stops me flip flopping as much Grin

join the party, Phil.

I really think u should try it out, it is an awesome game.

spent less than $100, and u can get an army

the game system is VERY challenge and the models are freakin million times better than GW stuff.

if u want to borrow some of my models for a try out, u r welcome to.

as i'm starting a trollkin army (yes, building my second horde army now!!), so u can borrow my skorne.

If anyone is keen to start I have a Trollblood army (unassembled I am keen to sell - but have been to lazy to advertise) and a fully painted Cygnar force I will be selling... could also, at a stretch be inclined to sell my LoE.

And lo another update graced the blog with unprecedented levels of regular content.

I managed to snap some blurry (horrible Cam) pics of the process I use for Chips, there'll be a better one later but this should do for now. Unfortunately pics of a finished light will have to wait for the weekend when theres natural light and I'm home.

I've also got a bit part appearance by the first PP plastics offerring, Exemplar Bastions, which I'll definitely bring down to club for people to have an oogle at on sunday.

Done a bit of a total up and through some shrewd purchasing I've managed to get:

Gorten BBox - NZ$30
2 Blasters & Rockram - NZ$40
Thor & Foreguard Box - NZ$70

So roughly $140 so far even if I did splash out on the Forgeguard but they're cool enough models I really don't mind.

For my money I've got a fair amount of customisation in my staring games, I think I'll whip the driller up to painted state this week and play some Battlebox games with it this weekend and then go for a bit of variety next weekend.

I just can't stop myself though, I'm eyeing up Durgen and some Highsheilds but most of all...

The Bear (with attached dwarf) who will work for my contract, I'm a menace to my wallet.

I'm so weak, I bought it, all of it plus Gudrun...

Weak...

But Still, BEAR SMASH!

Gorten BBox - NZ$30 (Trademe)
Bokur - Free
2 Blasters & Rockram - NZ$40 (Trademe)
Thor & Foreguard Box - NZ$70 (Maelstrom)
Bear & Gudrun - NZ$88 (Maelstrom)
Durgen & Highsheilds - NZ$42 (Trademe)

Total - NZ$270 (2 Casters, 7 Jacks, 1 Minion Warlock, 3 Solos, 12 Infantry)

And for that I've probably got two pretty good tournament armies.

That had better keep me rolling on the painting trail for a while, the pile is starting to get away from me even with a new army... I can't resist deals!
