Hi everyone. I'm the new guy, both in regards to the forum and 40k, which I picked up last August. I thought I'd post what I've painted lately and if anyone has any comments of constructive criticism, then please feel free Smiley

I'm going to work backwards, so here is what I painted last:

Master Scout Kaim (Urban Infiltration gear):

Veteran Sargent Festus:

Brother Chaplain Stone:

That'll do for a start. I also have some regular Marines done as well. If people want to see a full army I can post that Smiley

Nice scout. I'm guessing the body is Telos (or whatever the special character's called) and the head's from Iron Pig (I think that's their name)?

Very nice.

hella tidy dude, those are some fine marines there.

from here i guess you could start working up more than just one layer of highlights.  while your highlights are good and fine, they'd benefit from having another 'mid-shade' working between it and the base colour

though having said that i admit i don't do this myself - mainly because of laziness.

you figured out a chapter badge for these fellas?

Some nice fine detail there, doing camo on the cloak and writing on the scrolls, doing work that tiny with any success will probably elude me for quite some time. I wish my painting was even half way to this level after next year Cheesy

I'm afraid I've got too much training to go to give any advice here Smiley

Hi guys. While the weather packed in over the weekend I painted up my terminator Sarge from the AoBR box set. While I didn't like the miniature quality that much it was still quite fun and different from regular marines (Or vehicles *shudder*).

As you can tell, I had some trouble with the face and eye. Need to practice more flesh me thinks Smiley

Well despite not getting any responses (*sob*) I'm going to continue adding things... These are the terminators that came with the AoBR box set, I'm not a very big fan of these things after painting other stuff first, but they let you play around with stuff. I've made the red a lot darker and used a much thinner highlight which gives the impression of worn armor rather than a highlight. Plus the Iron Halo bases make them look much cooler ^_^

Now, after mulling the idea around of White Templar crosses for the icon around someone suggested using the Black Templars cross and then changing it to my own stuff. Looking at the black Templar stuff (especially the upgrade pack and the sword brethren squad) sold me on the idea, and while I haven't done anything on these guys it's all going to start from now on. So big thanks to you guys for the idea of the crosses ^_^

These are looking great! The bases really suit them.

The Black Templar upgrade sprue is really good. It has HEAPS of stuff on it. I out-fitted everyone in my 1850 army with two boxes! Shocked

There are many different crosses, by the way, as you'll see in the below links; any cross you choose has been done before, as usual and all that sort of thing. Smiley

looking rad, i second the posi comments on the bases

the only thing i have to criticise is the sergeants eye?  would you consider just trying to dab a little spot of black to make the iris larger?

its a fickle comment i know Sad but i thought i'd just throw it out there

I haven't commented because my level of painting is clearly below yours so I can't say all that much to help, but I'll give encouragement by saying it is looking very tidy, I am having trouble keeping my highlight lines the same width :S

Only thing I noticed was the highlight colour on the predator was perhaps a little bright for it.

Thanks very much guys Smiley

I think I can manage that. Although someone else said the eyeball was to big... Is that why the Iris looks to small?

yeah some of the models have such a small eye area that you can get away with just washing over it and not worry about painting those fiddly wee eyes

perhaps the eye is a little large.  making the iris a tad larger will balance that out but maybe a dot of wash over the whole eye will add some nice outlining for the eye, constrict the area of it a bit, and do that all without making him looking like he's got eye liner.

but like i said, that's if you were going to be picky.  seriously, all your terms look fantastic.

be good to see some weathering on that pred too btw Tongue

But I like shiny things... They keep me amused ^_^

No in all seriousness you're not the first to mention that, and I'm off two minds in regards to weathering: A) It looks fantastic when it's done right. B) I don't have the skills to do it right yet. All my weathering attempts look... well Tacky is the best way to put it... Plus I'm also of the opinion that all vehicles and armor is repaired after every battle. No exceptions. Thus you can see battle damage, but very little (or zero) weathering... However this will change when I've been painting longer...

One more month and it'll be my one year anniversary to the game! Maybe I should play my first game to celebrate?

holee, great painted stuff and no games yet?  you just may have to treat yourself.

yeah, good weathering looks like a tricky exercise.  personally i did a quick weathering effect by just drybrushing bestial brown on the underside of my tanks and the rims followed by some rough edging with boltgun metal to show chips and whatnot.

it works fairly well i believe on darker shades, so DA green in this case, and was a bit too bright on whites, like my deathwing.  had to paint balck in spots before doing the boltgun metal edging.  i can link soem pics if you're interested at all.

others will obviously go more hard-out using two shades for their weathering, a lighter on darker scheme, and it works damned well.

as for your reasoning for keeping the tanks clean and battle ready that's fair enough too Wink really, marines are more deployed straight in to the battle from their barges, so i guess they wouldn't have much time to get dirty before they get to grips with the enemy (unless you're looking at so-called infiltrating marine armies like the raven guard for example)

but you talking about the repainting of the vehicles reminds me of a piece of old terminator fluff that was written during Rogue Trader, where a squad of blood angels terminators are about to teleport into battle.  one of the squad members is wearing a suit that was gifted to the chapter from the ultramarines, but the chapter badge and shoulder pad was never repainted because this apparently 'angered' the suit's machine spirit and wearers of the suit would face malfunctions and grizzly deaths when wearing the suit, if it wasn't in its original colours.  so they left the original paint job, all scarred and flaking

i really liked that little tidbit they'd chucked in Smiley
