I bought a pack of these earlier in the week for the first time, never assembled this product before.  What do people recommend for cutting out the tray bases?  Hacksaw?  Heavy duty craft knife?  Can you snap/break them out somehow?

Gidday,

I got a large Stanley knife and used a ruler. Several cuts go about three quarters of the way through; I then snapped it off.

I assume you mean the GW ones with large/small bases marked out?

These are great. I use a knife, slighly old and slightly blunt. Score and snap. I use clippers for the 'edging'.

They are good - particularly when using something like the Iron Halo tray edges...

Can't help think though that there must be some "cheaper" plastic card of a similar durability...  having had no luck around my local craft shops...  this could be something for the "how to save $$ thread"?

If you buy plasticard industrially it is about $30 for a little over 1000mm * 500mm. You will get quite a few movement trays out of that.

Where can you get industrial plasticard from? For that price I could make a squadron of Thunderbolts or a Titan. . .

I found a place down the line a bit what where about $60 per sheet for 1mm pvc card what is what me and everyone else use to make models. the sheet was i think 2600x1800. not bad for the price.

I will have to hunt the web site down again, just google pvc sheets in nz and you will find supplyers

I got mine from Industrial Plastics, about half-way between the Skytower and Victoria Park Market.

Next time I go by I will make a note of getting the exact name of the place and street address.

Apparently they get a fair number of people going there and saying "What? How much? I pay that for an A4 sheet of the stuff!" and that sort of thing.

Do they sell tin (magnetic) sheets as well?

Modern Plastics
190 Victoria Street West
Ph 379 0399

High Impact Styrene (This is what Plasticard is made of so that is what you should ask for):
Size: 1380*760
Thickness
1.0 mm $12.95
1.5 mm $19.43
2.0 mm $26.02 (Mordheim card thickness)
3.0 mm $38.97 (Necromunda STC bulkhead thickness)
It comes in either black or white.

Tin is no good as it is not ferrous - what you want is steel. I forget where dad told me to get that from, but I will post it when I remember. They will cut it to size for you there too.

Alternatively you can just paint magnetic paint to the plasticard. That seems to work ok.
