I just want to take a moment to say that I am really impressed with reaper miniatures.  They are expensive, but they have ranges which match up almost perfectly with various fantasy armies.  If you are considering some conversions or unique model choices for your units/characters in a fantasy army I suggest taking a look.

Bearing in mind of course that...  I believe these models are now only available as "prepainted" ones...

Is that right? Good thing I didn't go buying any... are you sure of this?  what's your source?

edit: all I can find from the website faq is this that only the following models come prepainted, everything else is unassembled and unpainted http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Legendary%20Encounters

Apologies..  I keep getting Reaper & Rackham mixed up...  and it is Rackham which are no longer producing their metal range, but only pre-painted plastics (an utter shame btw).

Warpmaster (Darren from down south in that frozen part of the country....) has a particularly good eye/collection of links in regards to "alternate models"...  he may be willing to post his "link-a-pedia" somewheres Smiley

Actually you aren't far wrong there - and I'm speaking from my own experience.  Although as far as retail jobs go the wage was pretty good...

Never work in retail, and never will, got 2 friends who use to work in city GW 5-6 years ago.. $9 something an hour??    Angry

they told me, the only reason why they work there is becuase of 50% discount.

if someone going to pay me $9 an hour, i would have tell him to get stuff, and hire a monkey.

Given that I was working there at that time...  it sounds like they were part timers getting youth rates?  In which case $9 wasn't too bad...  (bearing in mind supermarket workers at the time were getting something in the realms of $6...).  Just prior to my leaving GW Oz decided that yes it was more expensive to live in NZ than Oz..  and used this as part of their reasoning in matching up NZ Staff Wages with that of those in Oz (NSW in particular IIRC)..  which equated to a decent payrise...  and not a bad rate at all in comparison to other comparable retail positions.

And most part-timers indeed ARE only working there for the staff discount...  which is a current theme world-wide...

I was going to UOA around that time as well.  Philfy was still working there just as I started coming in again after a huge hiatus to play 40k again.  Only very vaguely remember him.

Me and my brother went there quite often when he was in medicine school, but we usually went in, quickly bought what we want, and got out as quick as possible before we got swamp by red-clothed staff. Tongue

this is probably why I can't remember Philfy.

Not until my brother graduated and busy working in the hospital, and I had no one to play with, then I started going in again, and actually playing there.

I wonder what happen to all the staff who use to work there?

James is now ST luke manager, wonder what happen to the rest?

The Last time I saw Chris was at the Rally of New Zealand in Hamilton. He had a stall of cars and models. He was working at a model shoppe in Silverdale. Can't recall its name.

Righty-o. Back on topic:

I toodled on down to GW St. Lukes yesterday; I had a dekko at the new Empire.

Greatswords: A ridiculous $75
Archers and the hard-back book are about $45
Steam tank in all its puny glory (it is smaller than I certainly thought it would be; not even half the size of a S.M. Rhino; it is on a chariot base after all Roll Eyes): $106

The new battalion is about $175 - $180

On a better note, and in a very strange turn I must say, the price banding on metal models are being done away with. Each blister will return to being individually priced! Golly! What this means apparently is that for some metal models the customer will be paying less.

James tells me that only about 110 items are going up in price.

Does anyone here actually thing GW cares if you buy from a discount independant retailer? No? Not one bit. The indys still have to buy thier stock from GW so GW gets their cut anyway. I for one will continue to buy from wherever has what I need, when I need it. Big stuff from Vagabonds for the 15% discount. Small stuff from either Vags or GW depending on who has what I need, and books from GW because they are cheaper.

Also remember that Vagabonds do a layby service. I make great use of it, puttin a couple of hundred bucks worth of stuff on layby and pay it off at $20 a week. While I pay off one lot, I am painting the previous lot. This also has the added bonus of not having a mountain of unpainted stuff floating around sapping your will to paint.

ok then
if savings can be made over the interweb.....a t overseas sites. Can someone list a few of the better, more trust worthy(no hidden vat/tax )with a good range of models. i get a bit lost on the net (its all the "ahem" sites)what are some of yous fulla's best places to shop, and why?

You should check out Vaul's cost saving techniques thread if you haven't already.

Here is an example of Maelstrom versus GW webstore, firstly both offer free shipping if you don't mind skipping the track and trace option. Secondly, due to size and weight restrictions, Maelstrom splits orders once they get around the $180-200NZD mark, which means you are not going to get stung by nasty customs which charge you an extra 12.5% on orders over $300NZD.

I recently made an order from Maelstrom which came to a total of 104 UK pounds, this converted to 280 NZ dollars. (this includes the $5NZD charge for currency conversion)

The exact same order from GW website came to $314 AUS dollars, which converted to New Zealand currency comes to a total of $399 NZD.

If that isn't a cost saving, I don't know what is, like Hereticus said, GW don't really give two flying frigs, it's still money coming into the bank anyway, we are still indirectly supporting the guys who make the sport/hobby we play, that's good enough in my books.

Incidentally.. .  don't bother ordering from GW Oz Mail Order (which your above calculation obviously came from)...  you'd make a better comparison, and also a saving over the GW OZ site by working out of the GW UK Mail Order site  (In particular for the "Mail Order Only" items which Maelstrom and other indies can't stock).

Tanks don't belong in WFB anyway!  *chuckles*  (Wonder if they will do a skaven Rat-Tank such as was seen in the '04 Chronicles?)

Told you it was puny.  Tongue

The next logical question is: Why is the Steam Tank the same price as the Valkyrie? One is a lot bigger than the other...  Huh Roll Eyes

I read a thread on another warhammer forum which looked into the relation between the cost of a model and the points value it has in the particular game system it is from.  Reportedly, gw sometimes matches this up so that people are spending a proportional amount of money on how valuable an addition your new model will be to your army.  Not sure how often this is truly the case, or whether it is a real trend, but the possibility of it makes me suspicious.

If you want to start a new army, and would like to make up the required points value for tournament games but by spending the least amount of money, one logical solution is to get the models which have the highest points values in the game - you'll need less of them that way.  Interesting thought.  Steam tank is definately a sizeable chunk of your army clocking in at 300 points.

Well "Greed Workshop" just gave me over $300 of "free" miniatures as prizes for TS2.

Credits were credits due, they may be expensive, but they are generally "good guys" that work for GW.

As for the STANK, not 'that' big (its the same size as metal one I think. But its a nice kit, with a great looking interior. Also its plastic and people will want 1-2 at most, so of course it will be pricey for what it is.

I'm still getting one (probably), as my Empire have been waiting in the UK for 3 years (and another 3 years before I left) for me to return and paint them..... damn that's 3,000 of unpainted empire sat in a boix for 6 years. Doesn't tme fly. I think I got a little "OT".

I wonder what happen when your EOTG lizard army VS a double Stream tanks army?

Maybe it is the only army which can stop your lizards' invasion over the land of warhammer.
