Imperial Guard!
I tried this tactic the other day and found myself slaughtered as
I found myself tossing up between Rapid Fire or charge!!
Has anyone else tried this and do you think it is better to rapid fire
lasguns or charge as both times you get 2 attacks??
Has anyone else found any tactics with Imperial Guard
which work mostly concerning the Assault Phase?? (or any other tactics)

Well...
Gvardsmen aren't going to win close combats uery easily, pvt it that way.
The best tactic is to hold yovr grovnd and rapid fire. If the threat of combat is there, it is going to happen; might as well shoot and hopefvlly take ovt a few of 'em before it happens.
Remember, with Imperial Gvard, despite what people may try to tell yov, it isn't the troops who will win yov the game, no: it is the entire army working as one force. (I find that the tanks win me games!) I haue fovnd the same with The Empire in fantasy.

I see...
I have a predominately infantry force with a chimera and leman russ
but have a platoon of 60 regular guardsmen (+ armoured fist squad)
IG is my only army so trying to develope good tactics. Is a basilisk worth
it?? it seem not
a full squad vs say a mob of orks is so badly torn up and destroyed it seems better
to avoid combat!
Also can you use snipers by themselves?? I cant find it in the codex and it says
they have to be part of special weapons squad?

Hmmmm... I see.
No, yov can't vse snipers by themselues.
I don't own a Basalisk, yet many others do. Depends on how yov play I gvess.
I wovld get more tanks. No two bvts abovt it, bvddy, as they say in America.

Is it worth paying 20pts for carapace armor for all my squads or
buy another squad? I was thinking of armouring up squads to
keep them on the table longer!!

i like close order drill that way you can rapid fire and when assaulted your get I+1 and Ld+1. you can have a sinper squad but it'll have to be a ratling squad, but ion saying that the new codex is very soon. I think the armour depends what army your playing with a bolter AP5 it's prob worth it but if you hide in some cover 4+ save my mate does this with his Gretchen they they become surprisingly hard to kill

Heh, don't get too caught up in doctrines, because in about a week they won't exist for regular infantry. The only unit that gets doctrine choices in the new codex are veterans

Have to ask, but in a nice way, where is the rock you've been under?
The new book comes out, as Daryl says, next month and Doctrines are gone. So, I would just hold fire until then before making drastic list decisions.

cant consolidate into combat right and
no sweeping advances??

it's a big concrete rock called work, i wish i had enough brain power to remember all the rumours but unfortunately i have enough trouble remembering the 5th ed rules.
Sweeping advance, look in the rule book, it's in there. only model which can't as far as I'm aware is terminators. but yes, NO consolidation into combat must remain MORE than 1" away so if you get a 1 on difficult terrain roll you can't assault
