Starting my new High Elf army, using a purple/yellow scheme and the keep bases from iron halo.  I have all the time in the world to paint this army, and the determination to stick at it night after night, but i'm still lacking a bit in the skill department, so they don't always turn out as cleanly as I would like.  If anyone can offer any obvious tips that will help me improve, let me know!  So far I don't think i'm watering down my paint to the right degree, and my highlighting gets a bit messy.  I might try going from light to dark rather than the other way around, for my next few guys.

Below:  Getting started on an assortment of models to use as archers - including a couple of older edition metal figures, and a noble on foot variant from the prince/noble box.

Below: an 'Alastria' model from reaper miniatures, picked this up at NATCON second hand.  Decided to go with phil's idea of using greenstuff on the base, but only after it occured to me that I could pull my 'flaming chariot' trick and make it into a flaming spell effect.  Otherwise I would have had to saw off the circle thing she comes on and put it on a regular base.

Below: Pretty happy with the bases from Iron Halo.  Going for a 'magical city' theme for the army.  Might see if I can get a stone tower of some kind to use as a centrepiece when putting the army on display.

Looking good, nice choice of colours. I've got a nice easy recipe for skin tone if you want.

- Base coat Dwarf Flesh
- Wash Dark Flesh (just REALLY water that sucker down, too thin is way better than too thick). You want it to run into all the recesses.
- Dwarf Flesh highlights (over 75% off skin, ignoring the deep recesses). Make sure you leave the wash to completely dry before this or it all goes to custard.
- Elf Flesh highlights over 75% of the previous colour.
- any further highlights you want, pay particular attention to the brow, cheek bones and nose for the best effects.

I saw these in person in the weekend just past.

They are coming out very nicely, I like the purple you have used and the highlighting is looking good, keep it up. Will be great to see the finished unit.

Man it is taking freaking ages to paint these models, still at a rate of one per evening.  Finally coming close to finishing this freakin' BSB though, which has taken a lot longer to do.  Either I am just a slow painter or they are looking good.  Unit of 10 archers done, 4 white lions done, BSB done, 1 mage done.  Iron Halo bases really help the look of this army, but damn they are expensive.

Looking good! It'll be great to see them 'on table'. Are you going to get them done for Tin Soldiers 2, or are you aiming for GuardCon in Sept or whenever it is.

Hey Luke,

You should look in the bits collective as I've dropped in a few Silverhelms. There should be a bolt thrower as well.

Coming along very well since I last saw.

That BSB was worth the time, looks really nice!

Keep up the effort mate, should look awesome in games and get you some nice painting points in comps.

Well i'm getting some good deals from various people including yourself.  I work part time and live at home.  The credit card is helping pay for this stuff, but that will end up costing me bad in the long run.  Worth it though, gives me tonnes to do with my spare time - something I have a lot of right now.

I saw these in person today, and they look great! The pastel colours and nonmetallics are a great combination and give the army a really nice look overall
