So I checked out the first demo's of the new War of the Ring game at GW St Lukes on Saturday, seems to play somewhere between a mix of LOTR, Warmaster, Warhammer and 40K.

That's not to say it's a real hodgepodge, but if you are familiar with all four systems then you will easily see the inspiration for a lot of the different aspects.

Initial feelings are:

Yay - If I buy more LOTR figures I'll be able to play big games quickly with lots of minis.

Ow - If I want to play WOTR I'll need a lot more Lord of the Rings figures to play a reasonable length game. How's that bank balance looking

Hmmm - The base game system is innately a bit more random than Warhammer when it comes to who charges/taking the advantage when maneuvering, although special rules and unit upgrades (like banners) seem to mitigate that a bit, more testing required to compare.

Cool - 10 forces (5 good, 5 bad) with rules for 25% allies - collecting a fun set of armies based on the minis/units you like seems very viable - a welcome change from Warhammer.

I'll probably be picking up the book when it comes out, may be able to come up with a couple of small forces for people to try out.
