Found this out on the weekend and wanted to hear what the general concensis was on this.

The rules say when the unit is beaten in combat - squig bomb goes off
I questioned this, what even if all the squigs are dead? The rules say when the unit is beaten in combat.

so here's a poser for you:
I was up against Ryans Lizards, he'd shot the unit to pieces, only herders are left, no squigs. Is it still a squig herd? Is the unit immune to psych? If I had charged a unit of saurus warriors (and gotten my arse kicked) would the squig bomb still go off?

Ryan asked me why I didn't after the game, I told him, other than do a questionable move, I held off.

(This was a game when his Slan and one temple guard, held off my Big uns, until the orcs lost combat and ran away in turn 6. I don't like frogs!)

I read it somewhere before, but can't remember where..
when all squigs are dead then it won't go off.. must have at least 1 squig left in the unit.

"Q. If all the Squigs in a Squig Herd are killed (so there are only Night
Goblins left), and the unit subsequently breaks from combat, does the
Wild Squigs rule still apply?

A. No.  The rule is called "Wild Squigs".  If no Squigs remain, the rule
does not apply.
S. Orcs & Goblins Army Book page 26 / Direwolf FAQ Council Interpretation"

Note this is an interpretaton not a GW FAQ.
And yes - I did rule it the other way as RAW.
I like their logic better...
