WIP woodies and stuff

After picking up some Warhawk riders the Wood elves have converted me. So here is the beginnings of a Custom built ie: Cheap as chips army.
Just started on some scratch built treekin. The treeman will be coming along as soon as I get some motivation.
They have yet to acquire heads, spites and leaves.
C&C welcome.

Wow those treekin are freaking awesome! I think it could look good without any heads, as they are supposed to just be collections of dead logs held together by magic sprites.
4 is a good number for the treekin, but the general idea is to not take the elder upgrade.
BSB is pretty neat too!

Hey guys,
Thank you for all your comments.
Yup thats all made outta reliable sprue plastic : )
I really don't like green stuff in general and only will use it if i have to.
Anyone out there know of something better???
Big thank you to Bignic, Fuj, Simon, and other Nic for providing bits so the Army can take shape. This is in the form of arms, heads, cloaks and whatever bits they had free in their bits box and spares.
Tasty Warhawk riders that started this whole Project. I think they're my fav models : )
1st Unit of 12 Glade guard. Notice the transformation of High elf archers to the scions of Athel Loren.
Possible colour scheme 1. May have decided to go for a winter theme with light blues and kamo green.
The paint job looks good but photo'd so close looks complete kak. I'm more in awe of those pro painters yet again : )
Too much beer energy so thought I'd do a quick post but its late. Bed time

Why no elder? - the elder effectively allows you to spread wounds between himself and the unit (e.g. random allocation from shooting/magic or directed attacks in combat) - potentially allowing more models to live to fight another day - for 20 points you get this and an extra attack. The only down side is if a challenge forces a treekin model not to fight but you can prevent that by placing the elder on the end of a unit.

I always considered 20pts for +1 attack pretty damn expensive. In addition to the comments you made, sometimes having a model that can be challenged is a big downside. The 'general' part of my comment comes from never (well, maybe once or twice) having seen champions being taken in units of Minotaurs, Dragon Ogres, Ogres or equivalent. No reason to buck the trend unless you can see a clear benefit
</offtopic>
The Glade Guard look pretty damn good too, respect on the unit of 12 with command
Glad to see my spare bits went to a good home
BTW If you happen to want to buy 4 brand new but assembled warhawk riders....

That's one Strength 5 magical attack - same price as a sword of might and less than a sword of striking - seems a bargain to me
What kinds of heads do the hawks have and what riders models....

Thanks for the advice guys.
Will be definitely keen for some more warhawk riders. Check your PM Nik.
Got a bit distracted by the large "pack donkeys", as Derick refers to them.
Personally I think they look the shizzzz.

The make or break stage of the Treeman.
Foliage added. The stuff on the left corner is the leaves : )
The head to come. Which will be the deciding factor if it stays or goes.

Let's see you make 20 Glade Guard out of sprue too.
Seriously though, very nice work Phil2*. If you're thinking about taking Wild Riders or Glade Riders consider making sprue horses and/or combining them with the Dryad kit.
* you'd need to read my blog to understand this

It's a pretty neat idea isn't it?
If you paint these up to look wicked awesome Phil you'd be looking at Best Arm awards for sheer ballsy innovation.

The resurrection
Haven't posted for an age. I've been distracted by my High Elf army and so have not been working on this project for a long time. Not to worry though, since I'll be moving back into completion mode soon.
Iron Halo is running a painting competition which I took an interest. Here is the Dueling scene I cam up with. Inspired by my 1st game aginst 7th ed O&G a few months back. Too bad none of my games against the WAAUGH have gone as swimmingly. Hope you guys enjoy.
The Fury of WAAAUGHH...
...meets ASF and a really big sword

You'd make n elf blush
Well its crap and persisting down outside so not going to the movies. Thought I'd do an update of what I've been upto since the last real post for WE. I think it has been around five months or maybe even longer.
Attended
FluffCon
which is part of BattleCry in FEb. 2000pt tourney with a large turnout ~50 or so just for WFB. Anybody who is interested in starting or attending a friendly tourney, this one is it. Great atmosphere and a great place for me to actually start to join the Tournament scene. This was my 1st real tournament and I enjoyed it immensely.
Placed 7th overall (so stoked, with HE). Took out the best new comer award and the Team award (Glenn patel and Rob Sadler my team mates)
After playing a fluffy army for so long the club organised
CheesyCon
. I picked up a Star Dragon commonly known as 'Betsy' to attend. The Competition was a round robin with the winner decided by victory points alone. The Star Dragon proved how much of a crutch it really was. For a novice like myself it helped me get 3rd behind a Horde of orcs and The cheesiest 3 Steg + Slann army New Zealand will ever see. The Driving force behing the Lizards was one Pommy Dave. With his brilliant and innovative play he was able to wipe all in front of him and basically pwned every army in the comp.
Speaking of which we come to the most recent tournament
Tin Soldiers 2
I attended, which was organised and attended by the none other 'Pommy Dave'. He took the most Stealthy Elven cheese army possible and was looking to threaten the same results at this tourney with a performance like CheesyCon. Somebody stop him! So here is a brief Batrep of my games through the competition.
Army I took was Star Dragon led cavalry force with Dragon Princes coupla chariots, 2 big blocks of spears and the obligatory eagles and Rbt's.
1st Game Gudge against "The Vod's" DoC
I really thought I was going to get bruised and battered in this game. Lucky for me Tony hadn't played with this army for around 4 months. Lucky for Tony I couldn't roll impact hits above a 1. It was touch and go all game. The deciding factor was the Eagles for me which did their thing and delayed his Big Death Star unit of his Bloodletters getting into combat for 2 turns. So The Summary of the game pretty much went like this. I couldn't roll to hit anything with the Dragon or impact hits, Tony couldn't roll a pursuit roll to win him the game.
11-9 win
2nd Game Vs 'Lil bro Simister' Vamps
Betsy got a taste of Smashing vamps early and along with all the cavalry charging. 1st turn big unit of graveguard reduced to pulp with only 3 left. His counter charges with the lord and his unit destroyed one chariot but couldn't quite get to the Dragon. My blocks of spears proved too much for ghouls and caused about 10 wounds due to their charge contacting both units. Russel had real bad luck on his rolls for practically everything. The most notable was his Wraiths and Banshee. I had no magic weapons to take care of them. They did nothing and died to overwhelming combat res from 10 WhiteLions.
20-0 win
3rd Game Vs 'Mr 40K' Lizards
Everybody says that RBT's are da bomb. So it was about time they actually did something for a change. So they finally did with the 1st round of shooting at EOTG. Hits on a 3, randomises 6 onto the Skink Priest, Wounds and pulps no more Skink priest. This in no way would have done anything to help my situation as Hagen still had overwhelming magic and 2 stegs that could have rolled all over my army. Lucky for me his Skirmishers provided a perfect Charge arcs for all my calvalry. 'Betsy' had both Stegs for dinner and the Dragon Princes managed to clean up. Pheewwwww ... 1st day over and 3 wins. Hope I hadn't used up all my luck.
20-0 win

Might as well finish this report whilst I still have it in memory.
2nd Day and I have been draw to play against the overnight leader.
4th Game Vs 'The man from Welly' Beasts
I had been told frightening stories and warned repeatedly about get pwned by this magic and combat heavy army. To be honest looking at his 14+PD, 2 Power Stone horde against my 4DD and scant amount of infantry this was gonna be a hurdle.
James placed all his characters in a big herd behind a forest with all his minotaurs, Spawn and chariots in regular order across the board. I had 1st turn and took my opportunity to Flames of the Pheonix his large herd, no Cigar unfortunately. I sat back waiting to recieve the hurt. I now know that 14+ Pd are nothing if you can't roll the casting cost and in reflection my only defence against his magic phase was to hope he rolled low. Not much of a defence really.
The winning of this game was again due to me getting a lucky charge into his Death Star unit with the Dragon and All the cavalry in Turn 2. With the demise of all his characters and his ambush units because of the Generals Death James still managed to put up a huge fight. This happens when you still have 3 chariots, 2 spawn and 2 units of minotaurs left.
16-4 win
5th Game Vs 'Pommy Dave' HE
Rarely has Elven cheese been so stealthy. Star Lance, Reaver bow, big unit of Sword masters 45 archers and a Arch mage to pump out some punishment. This was going to hurt my army with minimal numbers. Little did Dave know that I brought along my 'Super RBT'. The Bolt thrower took 3 rounds of 40 odd shots with everything bouncing off apart from 1 lucky arrow that took out 1 crew
I played like a muppet in this game and was led all around the board. It was a supreme learning experience for me in tactics. It was a supreme learning experience for Dave on the rolling of dice front. The man couldn't roll a hit, wound, terror test or a break test to save him the game. Thanks for letting me win fella. Bet ya didn't notice the dirty gnome to your left who kept on replacing your dice when you had to roll some thing important!
Dave has moved back to the U.K after this tourny and we all wish him well. Thanks for letting me win before ya left mate
18 -2 win
Final Table to Decide the Tournament
Vs 'Big bro Simister' Lizards
Know good ol Ry from FluffyCon where he smashed me with pretty much the same army. Hope this wasn't going to be a trend. No EOTG but big blocks of Saurus, TG+ Slann and a Steg with lots of skirmishers and flyers. I had to split his army since his TG was stubborn and with cold blood rules it wasn't going to go anywhere. The game was a huge smash fest and was Funtastic. Ry blew my army to smithereens with Bolts of lightning and at one time a massive comet that hit all my units. The game was decided with two decisive combats with his big block of Saurus then his TG. Betsy challenged his Slann turn 5 and was turned it into French cuisine.
16-4 win
Post Tourney wrap up:-
The previous games in Cheesycon before the tournament really helped me learn the majority of the ins and outs of my army. Facing all those nasty armies, notably Pommy Daves Lizardmen really gave me the edge in tactics in this Tourney. The game against Dave with his 3 Steg army really prepared me FTW. Great 2 days and great opponents. 6 wins from 6 games and that gave me the overall Title.
Yup the beer tasted good after

Just got my order from Maelstrom of plasticrack goodies.
I got the whole range of Citadel washes and a whole lot of P3 paints. This should send my almost nonexistent painting into overdrive.
Things I've noticed
* P3 paints have better coverage but GW paints are more coherent when painting thin lines. Something to do with GW using powder pigments and P3 using fluid pigments.
*Gamezone models are fantastically sculpted and posed. Their casting is really substandard. The metal bits don't fit together at all well and will take a lot of green stuff to fix. Fine details such as hands are below standard. Theres alot of flash to clean of. Otherwise awesome looking posed model which is way better than GW.
Edit: Thanks Chris.

Other Way around, P3 uses liquid pigments which is why they thin better and blend better. I haven't noticed GW to be better at painting lines but then again I blend everything because I can now
