Hello guys I have been out of 40k for about 6 months and like you all said. I will be back; well I am now that the new marine codex will be out in about 2 weeks and the new rules out.

So at this present time I don’t really have any idea on a list due to I have nothing to go off as no codex, well I have not changed still marines and still going be ultra marines. I see some of the new models out are looking really nice so I though it would be time to start a new 5th edition list.

This time I am going for 2,000 points as I want to have a nice range of the new models, in 2 weeks I will be going to get the black reach box set to get me a nice cheap rule book and some cheap marines. To day 14/9/08 I went and got me some supplies and some test marines.

Went and spent a crazy amount on paints and $35 on 5 test marines, I am going to try out these new paints and washes and see if they are good or if I can get any better using them. As my painting generally is only ok and what is worse it has now been over 6 months since I have even looked at painting.

First Test Marine

Firstly I fecked up all 5 marines by being to dam heavy on the primer so shits already crap. After I finished hitting my self for being so dumb at something I have done thousands of times, I put a test body together.

Next I got the new mordian blue, and gave the body and good going over, no we have a blue marine with it not looking as good as a base of ultra blue just seams to dark. But this is how I have seen people do marines with the new paints. Then I gave it a once over with asurmen blue wash, new washes do cover well but I found they don’t get in the crevasses as good as an ink.

So now I have a darker blue model with a sort of dark highlight in the crevasses. From what I have been reading the next step was just get ultra blue and do your normal highlights. Did this and stopped and looked at the model and it looked like I have just backed tracked 5 years and the paint just was just shit.

Will post up image of marine once cam has charged.

Second test Marine

Ok so first try did not work so well, I had a think for a while and thought if I do a 2nd coat of the Mordian Blue Foundation after the wash it might bring up the blue a bit brighter. Then turned away from this and thought it will still be to dark. So what I am going to do with this one is Mordian Blue Foundation, to coast of the Asurmen Blue wash and then try an ultramarine blue blend over the model and then a mix of ultra blue with white with as highlight.

I have to go to my parents for dinner now so all I have done is a Mordian Blue at the moment will post more tomorrow after I get somewhere.

And for all you that dont know me this is me at a happy time  Grin Grin

Over and Out.

Good show Matt! I knew you'd be back!

"Good Lord!" I exclaimed out loud as I realised that this is the only one of your posts that I have actually been able to comprehend; I knew you could spell! Tongue No offence! Grin

Yes, I agree, some of the new models look a little too tempting.

Ok to day I was so lucky and my wife left me get the new Black Reach box set. This set is only a crazy $105 bucks insane for what you get. Yes the models are sort of one piece snap together ones but they look like the normal box set ones and a lot less gluing.

You get heaps for the cost and the amount you save. This will be the start of my new army with possible the start of an ork one on a later date. And you get the new rules that save you like $90 just not buying the big size and why do I need that when I already have a PDF of that one if I want to read the stories and look at the images.

Below I have some images of the new box set and the images of my first test marine from yesterday. As I have only just go home I was going to keep going on the 5 man team I got yesterday but I though being me and never finishing anything I start I will jump onto on of these new marines in the Black Reach set.

I also had a quick look at the ones they painted at GW and there paint job was shocking but they did still use the Mordian Blue as a base and just did not use the wash over the top. So what I am going to do is Mordian blue base with a nice wash and then a top coat of the Mordian Blue over that and Ultra highlights with possible a bit of blending on the shoulder pads.

So if I get a good mock up model done tonight before I go to bed I will post up some images, also sorry if the images are slightly blurry of cyber shot is not the best at close ups but will try my best.

Over and out

So this one looks like its coming out better, I have done a nice sort of step by step if any new guys need to know how I did this.

First off I cut the model from the spurs and found they went a little heavy around the shoulder pads with the molding and needed to trim a bit away not leaving a nice smooth pad but I will try and even out on later models. And then I gave it a light easy coat of skull white spray and it come out like this.

Next I gave it a once over with the Mordian Blue Foundation and I am slowly starting to like these, one easy coat over and the model has a nice even layer and its nice and thin and not losing any detail. After it was dry it looked like this.

After that I gave it a coat of the Asurmen Blue wash, and also these are starting to do a nice job. I have decided to do two coats of this to make sure I get a nice dark blue almost black into the crevasses.

With First Coat

With Second Coat

Ok so the next step is a little harder and took me about 30mins to do but should improve when i get back into it. This step i am i just sort of winging it and seeing if it works and it did a very well. After the wash i went back over the model with the Mordian Blue Foundation, but just filled in the armor plates and left all the dark highlights and it brought the blue back up just how i wanted and made the dark highlights stand out even more. I have made these images bigger so you can see the big change between this step and the previous one.

Now i have the armor all done we can move on to base coating all the details, i have done the chest and the line on the pads in chaos back. Then done all bits that are going to be white or Bleach bone in Fortress Grey. And done the eyes and the grenade in a P3 skone Red.

Next up we have the 2nd coat on the gear, normal things here Shining gold for the pad and chest, bleach bone on the skulls and crest, blood red on the eyes. Only one step left and its highlights.

Would be well worth a couple of highlight layers on the blue armour Matt. Still very flat and the highlighting will further enhance the effect of that wash.

Ok a new day and i am now awake again, this morning i was a bit groggy still from waking up at 6am. So what i did first thing was get all my new models and put them together and clean of all the flashing. this took about 3 hours and was a bit of a boring stage but needed to get it done. so i know have all 10 marine made my dreadnought and 5 terminators and my commander. And a second bonus for my weekend is i have found a new home for the orks and got me some more marines thanks peter dun. So far i have a good solid say 800 points worth of guys for $105 that's not bad at all. So for the people that have not seen the black reach guys below i have some images of them put together.

OK so now onto the rest of my marine i have followed the same steps as before.

1. base skull white
2. Coat of Mordian blue
3. First wash of Asurmen Blue
4. Second wash of Asurmen Blue
5. Top Coat of Mordian Blue
6. First coat of the details
7. second coat on the details
8. Highlight.

Here are the images of how they ended up.

And now onto the complete model i would say this is some of my best work, i would say it will be easily up to a good table stop standard for Events to get a very good paint score. have a nice look and i will slowly add more completed models up as i go. This is now my last day of work for a week so my updates might be few and far apart. Please leave comments and see what you think about the step by step of how to paint a marine. This model has taken about 6 hours to do but after a few of them this should get cut in half.

Thank you all

Matthew

the pics look great it's not the same when there all painted up at the shop. my misses grudgingly let me buy it to, but it came out the weekend i was moving house and now she's hidden it (unopened) apparently i can have it back when i unpack all my stuff or my mate buys of the ork half (i only hope it's soon). I'm looking forward to the new space marine codex too, but we wont tell her about that cause it's alot easier to hide a book (from her not me). What sort of brush are you using for the detail, mine always look like crap but its probally something to do with me and not the brush

Just using the standard GW fine detail but they don't last long i would say i get 5 guys done before it start curling at the end. The get the detail just really takes times very little on the brush and i keep it a bit wet so the paint spreed a little better GW paint is a slight bit to thick. I am not that good of a painter just try and try again this is about my 6th marine army over the years and i find its keeping to one type i cant paint any other race for shit. If you follow the steps i have done you will get them looking good to even without the highlight its will look very nice. as long as you say keep in the lines you will be fine, and the next thing what took me years to master is not rushing. If you take your time they will turn out nice. Shit 6 hours for a marine and i need to paint about 50 i am planing 6 months to a year to get this new army painted.

I've finally tracked my box down, there all assembled and undercoated.  Grin i bit the bullet and bought a can of citadel spray paint and a fine details brush. when you say the brush needs to be kept a bit wet do you mean with water or paint, i always thin the paint down with water before painting but it means that most of the time you need 2 coats. do you use it straight from the pot?

about the arms i swapped one of my nid heads with a mate for a heavy flamer but he wouldn't part with the missile backpack
